Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Accessibility Specialist provides support for students with a variety of identified disabilities. This position is responsible for creating and promoting an accessible and inclusive campus learning environment. This position oversees responsibilities such as the review of diagnosticdocumentation, the determination of appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations for students with diagnosed disabilities, the promotion of disability awareness through campus activities and events, the development of peer-to-peer initiatives, the oversight of testing center operations, and the development of support structures and initiatives for students with disabilities in-line with the University retention efforts.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews diagnostic documentation and meets with students to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations for the academic setting in accordance with federal, state, departmental, and University policies, procedures, regulations, and laws; maintains regular contact and follows-up with students registered with the CADR office; develops and maintains relationships with campus partners to best connect students to beneficial campus resources; communicates with faculty to serve as advocate for students

  • Assists with testing center operations and exam-related accommodations; supports the provision of alternate format texts and adaptive and accessible technology; analyzes and creates processes for the provision of other necessary academic accommodations (e.g., note taking, scribes, etc.)

  • Supervises/manages graduate and undergraduate staff; conducts onboarding and training for newly hired disability services staff members; promotes staff development and engagement in-line with best practices regarding educational accessibility and inclusion

  • Identifies and develops promising practices that will support the retention efforts of the University as it pertains to students with disabilities; creates peer-lead initiatives; develops robust online support resources; enhances partnerships between University Departments

  • Promotes disability services to the campus community; provides consultation and support to faculty and staff regarding ways to support students with physical, learning, or psychological/psychiatric disabilities

  • Manages the CADR social media Instagram account by conducting research, creatingand designing content, checking accessibility of content posting a minimum of two times per week, and keeping track of all posts in a Google Doc

  • Manages data by creating departmental surveys; determines outcome goals, selects target population, creates and disperses survey, and collects data.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of disability services and student affairs functions

  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA Amendments Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, The Fair Housing Act, and other related state and federal laws

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills

  • Strong technical skills

  • Strong counseling and advising skills

  • Commitment to supporting the needs of students from underrepresented populations

  • Ability to balance multiple concurrent tasks and responsibilities

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and navigate Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) appropriately

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Working knowledge of the social media platform, Instagram

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or education

  • Two or more years of related work experience
