Position Summary:
The Director, Electrophysiology (EP) Training Program at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Training Program. This role is responsible for program administration, curriculum development, accreditation compliance, and student success, including recruitment and workforce placement.
UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School's Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Training Program delivers comprehensive education and hands-on training in Cardiac Rhythm Management, Electrophysiology, and Structural Heart Disease. The program prepares individuals for clinical and technical specialist roles within the cardiac medical device industry and healthcare settings, while building the competencies required for certification and leadership in the electrophysiology field.
The Director partners with device manufacturers and clinical, academic, and hospital stakeholders to ensure high-quality, industry-aligned training and to advance program visibility and responsiveness to workforce needs. This role also includes outreach and engagement activities, including local travel to student career fairs and recruitment events. Additionally, the Director oversees budgeting, internal controls, and personnel management to support program growth, effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative, results-oriented leader with strong communication skills, a commitment to education and workforce development, and the ability to build partnerships across academic, clinical, and industry environments. Success in this role requires adaptability, strategic thinking, and a passion for developing future leaders in the electrophysiology field.
Position Key Accountabilities:
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the program to ensure continuity of training for all enrolled students.
- Responsible for creating, maintaining and managing a yearly operating budget.
- Collaborates with the Educational Directors for Cardiac Electrophysiology & Ablation and Pacing & Cardiac Rhythm Management to continually develop up to date curriculum for the program; coordinates visiting speakers. Oversees the development of standards to measure clinical competencies to produce competitively skilled students from the program.
- Networks to promote the UTHealth EP Heart Training Program to the UTHealth and the industry. Stays informed of the job market and adjusts recruitment and class size accordingly.
- Collaborates with UTHealth hospital partners to ensure compliance with their operating standards and to ensure access for training.
- Oversees student recruitment to the program at Universities and other schools of higher learning; will be required to travel on a regular basis.
- Has direct oversight of the workforce job placement program to assist new graduates of the cardiac electrophysiology training program.
- Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
- Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded; financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
HRS/IBHRE Certification (CCDS and/or CEPS) preferred
Minimum Education:
Master's Degree preferred
Minimum Experience:
7 years of related experience required
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
Security Sensitive:
This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position. Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure. A foreign adversary is a nation listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.
