What is a director welding?

A Director of Welding is a senior management role responsible for overseeing all welding operations within an organization. This includes developing welding procedures, managing welding staff, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and coordinating with other departments on large-scale projects. Directors of Welding typically have extensive experience in welding engineering, project management, and leadership. They play a key role in improving efficiency, maintaining quality control, and implementing new technologies in welding processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director welding?

To thrive as a Director of Welding, you need extensive experience in welding processes, strong leadership abilities, and typically a degree in welding engineering or a related field. Familiarity with welding codes, quality assurance systems, and certifications such as Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) is often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team management skills help drive project success and foster a safety-oriented culture. These competencies are crucial for ensuring high-quality work, regulatory compliance, and effective team leadership in complex welding operations.

How does a director welding typically collaborate with other departments to ensure project success?

A Director of Welding works closely with engineering, quality assurance, production, and safety teams to align welding operations with project requirements and overall organizational goals. This collaboration often involves coordinating welding schedules with production timelines, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and providing technical expertise on welding processes and materials. Effective communication and problem-solving are crucial, as the Director must balance project deadlines with quality and safety considerations. Regular meetings and cross-departmental reviews are common to address challenges and drive continuous improvement.

Job description

Description

Custom Engineering is currently seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Welding Engineer to

oversee all welding engineering, weld quality compliance, and procedural qualifications for our

fabrication operations. This role is critical to managing our quality system for the fabrication and
production of all ASME Section VIII Div. 1 pressure vessels, as well as ensuring compliance with

AWS and NAVSEA Welding Codes.

The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between technical code compliance and practical

shop-floor execution, serving as the technical liaison between customers and our production

team, while working closely with Operations, Quality, and Fabrication departments to ensure

flawless project delivery.

ASME, AWS & NAVSEA Code Compliance

* Procedure Development: Develop and manage Welding Procedure Specifications

(WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) per ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1,

NAVSEA Welding Codes, and individual customer specifications.

* Welder Performance: Manage all company welding procedures and Welder

Performance Qualifications (WPQ) utilizing TWI Welding Qualifier Software.

* Workforce Development: Coordinate and oversee the testing and qualification of new

welders (new hires) in partnership with HR and the Fabrication Plant Manager. Provide

ongoing weld-related training and education to shop personnel.

* Audits & Records: Update and maintain the company Quality Control Manual and

ensure all ASME records are maintained for the required minimum of seven (7) years.

Lead internal welding audits and assist with external quality and customer audits.

Front-End Engineering & Order Review

* Technical Review: Review new orders, engineering drawings, and customer technical

specifications to ensure qualified procedures exist to perform the work.

* Planning Integration: Work directly with the planning department to ensure correct

welding procedures and requirements are utilized on all orders before they are released

to the shop floor.

* Materials & Design: Review and approve purchase requisitions for correct material

designations. Audit Material Test Reports (MTRs) to ensure proper material compliance.

* Weld Mapping: Create comprehensive job travelers, weld joint records, and weld maps

when required by customer specifications.

Production Support, NDE & Heat Treatment

* Floor Operations: Monitor welders and active welding operations to ensure strict

compliance with WPS's and proper shop practices. Assist production and quality

personnel in rapidly resolving welding-related non-conformances.

* NDE & Inspection: Work with the Quality Department to ensure Non-Destructive

Examination (NDE) requirements for new orders are met. Assist in reviewing and

approving NDE procedures and results.

* Heat Treating: Review, advise on, and approve all Post-Weld Heat Treating (PWHT)

and stress-relieving applications and charts per customer specifications.

* Final Certification: Review calibration charts, create official Data Reports for pressure

vessels/parts, oversee the correct stamping of code tags, and schedule the Authorized

Inspector (AI) for hold points and hydrostatic testing. Submit final approved Data Reports

to The National Board and the customer.

Customer Liaison & Communication

* Client Interface: Act as the primary technical liaison between the customer and our

production team on jobs with specialized welding requirements.

* Meetings: Participate in customer conference calls and face-to-face meetings to discuss

technical welding requirements and project specifications.

* Drawing Literacy: Proven ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings

and customer technical specifications.

* Professional Attributes: Strong time management skills, self-motivation to work

effectively with minimal supervision, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced,

deadline-oriented environment.

* Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with

shop-floor welders, customers, and executive leadership alike.

Preferred Qualifications (Good to Haves)

* Hands-on experience working directly in a heavy fabrication or pressure vessel shop.
