Job description

About the Role:

The Vet Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing high-quality care to animals. This position involves assisting with routine clinical tasks, maintaining a clean and organized environment, and ensuring the comfort and safety of animal patients. The Vet Assistant will be responsible for preparing animals for examinations, administering medications as directed, and monitoring animal behavior and health status. This role requires compassionate interaction with both animals and their owners, facilitating effective communication and education. Ultimately, the Vet Assistant contributes to the smooth operation of the veterinary practice and the well-being of all animal patients.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of animal care and handling.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with clients and veterinary staff.
  • Physical ability to lift and restrain animals safely.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Veterinary Assistant or completion of a related training program.
  • Previous experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal care setting.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and veterinary software systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of animal species with confidence and care.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations.
  • Collecting medical history of pet from clients during their check-in to our clinic, while maintaining professionalism and compassion. Processing many different types of check-outs for clients.
  • Reading medication labels, selecting correct items, and filling medications for Veterinarians.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of examination rooms, to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Administer medications and treatments under the supervision of veterinary professionals, following established protocols.
  • Manage appointment scheduling, client communication, and record-keeping to support efficient clinic operations.
  • Forward booking return appointments recommended by veterinarians. Giving our clients a top tier experience overall.

Skills:

The required skills enable the Vet Assistant to perform essential clinical and administrative tasks efficiently, ensuring animal safety and client satisfaction. Strong communication skills are used daily to explain procedures to pet owners and coordinate with veterinary staff. Physical stamina and animal handling skills are critical for safely restraining and caring for animals during examinations and treatments. Preferred skills such as familiarity with veterinary software enhance record-keeping accuracy and streamline appointment management. Additionally, knowledge of medical terminology and certification in animal first aid improve the Vet Assistant’s ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and support clinical procedures.
