Job description

Director – Sealy Center for Structural Biology (SCSB) University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) – Galveston, Texas

UTMB opened in 1891 as the nation’s first public medical school and hospital under unified leadership. What began as one hospital and medical school building in Galveston is now a major academic health sciences center of global influence, with medical, nursing, health professions and graduate biomedical schools; a world-renowned research enterprise; and a growing, comprehensive health system with hospitals on four campuses and a network of clinics.

The Director of the Sealy Center for Structural Biology (SCSB) will provide strategic and operational leadership for a multidisciplinary research center in the John Sealy School of Medicine, and dedicated to advancing brain health, diagnostic disease markers discovery, and therapeutics including vaccines and antibacterials research. The incumbent will lead a team of experienced researchers to work in collaboration with UTMB schools, academic departments, faculty and external collaborators.

The Director of the SCSB is eligible for faculty appointment and will oversee scientific programs, foster cross-campus and external collaborations, secure extramural funding, and guide the center’s growth as an internationally recognized center. This role requires a dynamic scientific leader with a strong record of extramural research, team building, and administrative excellence.

Educational Requirements & Experience

  • PhD, MD or equivalent degree in relevant scientific discipline.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in structural biology, molecular biophysics, or related field.
  • Direct experience in impactful human health related research with sustained extramural funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles within academia, research institutes, or major scientific organizations.
  • Strong publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and complex research programs.
  • Eligibility for academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Experience leading large collaborative grants, consortia, or translational research initiatives is strongly preferred
