JOB SUMMARY

The Apprentice Production Technician - Wiring Harnesses and Modification Kits is an entry-level training position in GMRE's production work center. Working under the direction of a qualified technician, production lead, or manager. The employee learns to fabricate aerospace wiring harnesses and assemble modification kits in accordance with released technical data, work instructions, and quality requirements. The apprentice is expected to follow directions, ask questions when requirements are unclear, protect product quality, and progressively demonstrate the competencies required to perform authorized tasks with less direct supervision.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in assigned classroom, demonstration, and hands-on training covering GMRE procedures, production methods, workmanship requirements, and work-center safety.
  • Review engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, wire lists, bills of material, work cards, travelers, and process instructions with a qualified trainer before beginning work.
  • Perform basic wire-preparation activities after training and authorization, including measuring, cutting, stripping, marking, sleeving, applying heat-shrink, routing, and bundling wire as specified.
  • Use waxed lacing cord or other approved securing methods under supervision to produce neat, serviceable harness assemblies that meet applicable workmanship criteria.
  • Assist with connector, contact, splice, shield, and backshell assembly and with pin insertion or removal after the applicable task has been demonstrated and authorized.
  • Perform crimping, soldering, continuity testing, or other controlled or special-process work only after required training, qualification, and authorization have been documented.
  • Assemble modification-kit contents from controlled bills of material and work instructions, including counting, identifying, staging, bagging, labeling, protecting, and packaging components under direction.
  • Verify part numbers, quantities, material condition, and required identification during assigned tasks and immediately report shortages, damage, expired material, or discrepancies.
  • Select and use only the tools and equipment assigned or approved for the task; complete required pre-use checks and follow tool-accountability and calibration-status requirements.
  • Inspect personal work using the applicable acceptance criteria and present completed work to the assigned trainer, qualified technician, or inspector for required verification.
  • Complete production travelers, training records, material entries, and labor entries accurately and as the work or training is performed, including entries in GMRE COMS or other assigned systems.
  • Stop work and seek assistance when technical data are missing, conflicting, unclear, or appear incorrect, or when the employee is unsure how to perform an assigned task.
  • Follow requirements for foreign object damage prevention, electrostatic-discharge protection, shelf-life control, material handling, configuration control, and workplace safety.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, respond constructively to coaching, and support work-center priorities, schedules, housekeeping, and continuous improvement activities.


TRAINING AND COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT

  • Progress through observation, guided practice, supervised production work, and independent performance only after competency for the applicable task has been demonstrated and documented.
  • Complete assigned orientation and training in safety, foreign object damage prevention, electrostatic-discharge protection, tool control, material control, technical-data use, workmanship, and production-record completion.
  • Demonstrate each assigned skill using approved tools, current technical data, and defined acceptance criteria before being authorized to perform that skill without direct supervision.
  • Maintain required qualifications and participate in refresher or remedial training when processes change or additional instruction is needed.
  • Progression to the Production Technician level is based on documented competency, sustained quality and productivity, reliable attendance, supervisor evaluation, and business requirements.

Requirements:

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability and willingness to follow written procedures, work instructions, and verbal direction.
  • Mechanical aptitude and interest in learning aerospace wire-harness and modification-kit production.
  • Strong attention to detail and patience when performing repetitive, precision-oriented work.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools safely and develop proficiency with precision production tools.
  • Basic math, measurement, reading, and record keeping skills.
  • Manual dexterity, fine motor control, and the ability to distinguish wire colors, markings, part numbers, and small components.
  • Ability to accept coaching, communicate questions and mistakes promptly, and work cooperatively with trainers, Production, Quality, and other team members.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn GMRE COMS and related production software.
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, professional conduct, and commitment to safety and quality.
  • Must have transportation to work facility

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • No previous aerospace manufacturing or wiring-harness experience is required; qualified entry-level candidates with the aptitude and discipline to learn may be considered.
  • Vocational education, military technical training, electrical or electronic assembly experience, mechanical work, or other hands-on technical experience is preferred.
  • Previous training in IPC/WHMA-A-620, J-STD-001, or comparable workmanship standards is helpful but not required; GMRE will provide or assign required job-specific training.


SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance and be subject to a government security investigation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit or stand at a production bench for extended periods and perform repetitive hand and finger movements requiring fine motor control and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to visually inspect small components, markings, terminations, and wiring details and to distinguish wire and component colors as required for the work.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and move within the work center and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at times, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and follow work-center safety requirements.

TRAVEL REQUIRED

  • No routine travel is expected. Limited local or occasional travel may be assigned with approval.
