Director Process Safety Engineer information

What is a director process safety engineer?

A Director Process Safety Engineer is a senior leader responsible for overseeing and managing the process safety programs within an organization, especially in industries such as chemicals, oil and gas, and manufacturing. Their role involves developing and implementing safety protocols, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, assessing risks, and leading teams to prevent accidents and hazardous incidents. They also collaborate with other departments to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement. This position typically requires extensive experience in process safety engineering and strong leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director process safety engineer?

To excel as a Director Process Safety Engineer, you need deep expertise in chemical/process engineering, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and extensive industry experience. Familiarity with process safety management (PSM) systems, hazard analysis tools like HAZOP/LOPA, and certifications such as CSP or PE are commonly required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication skills are crucial for driving safety culture and cross-functional collaboration. These skills ensure the effective management of process risks, regulatory adherence, and the safeguarding of people, assets, and the environment.

What are the primary challenges faced by a director process safety engineer in establishing a strong safety culture across multiple sites?

One of the main challenges for a Director Process Safety Engineer is ensuring consistent safety standards and practices across diverse facilities, each with its own operations and culture. This often involves developing comprehensive safety protocols, delivering targeted training, and fostering open communication among site leaders. Additionally, the role requires regularly assessing process hazards, staying updated with regulatory changes, and leading incident investigations to drive continuous improvement. Success depends on strong leadership, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.

What is the difference between Director Process Safety Engineer vs Process Safety Engineer?

Job description

ABOUT THE COMPANY At RS, we are redefining how the world builds reliable energy infrastructure. We design and manufacture advanced composite utility poles that are lighter, stronger, and longer-lasting than traditional materials such as wood, steel, and concrete. Our poles are engineered for superior performance in the most demanding environments, providing utilities with a durable, low-maintenance, and sustainable solution for a more resilient grid.
With operations in North America and customers across 30+ countries, RS is a leader in grid resilience, driven by our values of Safety, Respect, Resilience, and Teamwork.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We're looking for a driven and detail-oriented Process Engineer to help advance our composite manufacturing operations and support RS's mission to build a more resilient energy future. In this role, you'll be at the center of continuous improvement efforts-enhancing safety, optimizing efficiency, and ensuring consistent, high-quality production across our facilities.
You'll work closely with cross-functional teams in Engineering, Production, Quality, and Maintenance to develop and refine processes that deliver exceptional results. From implementing new materials and tooling to driving LEAN initiatives and supporting process qualifications, you'll play a key role in turning innovation into operational excellence.
At RS, you'll gain hands-on exposure across all areas of the business, collaborate with passionate experts, and play an important role in strengthening our reputation as a global leader in advanced composite technology.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Develop, implement, and optimize composite manufacturing processes that improve safety, quality, and efficiency across production lines.
  • Analyze process data and performance metrics to identify improvement opportunities and drive root cause problem-solving.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce waste, improve yields, and enhance product consistency through LEAN and 6S methodologies.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance teams to introduce new tools, materials, and process technologies.
  • Support process qualifications, testing, and documentation for new and existing products.
  • Create and maintain process documentation, including work instructions, control plans, and validation reports.
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support to production teams to ensure proper process execution.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects aimed at cost reduction, process reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure all processes meet RS's standards for safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement.

WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 4- years of experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally with composite materials or process-driven production.
  • Strong knowledge of LEAN manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement practices.
  • Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements that enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Hands-on experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and exposure to CNC programming or industrial automation.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on root-cause identification and sustainable solutions.
  • Clear communicator and collaborative team player with strong organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; familiarity with ERP systems a plus.

WHAT WE OFFER
  • Competitive salary and performance-based incentives.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Retirement savings plans with company contributions.
  • Employer-paid life and short-term disability insurance.
  • Optional additional coverage (life, long-term disability).
  • Generous paid time off and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Opportunities for growth and development within a global, forward-thinking company.

Why Join Us?
At RS, you'll have the opportunity to make a direct impact on how critical energy infrastructure is built and maintained. You'll work with advanced composite technologies, collaborate with industry experts, and contribute to projects that strengthen reliability and performance across the power grid.
If you're looking for a hands-on engineering role where innovation and continuous improvement are part of everyday work, RS offers the environment, tools, and support to help you grow and succeed.
