Job description

Safety Engineer

Department: Safety

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Provo, Utah

Description

The primary function of the Safety Engineer is to provide support to assigned personnel and projects and to ensure projects meet current safety guidelines. The Safety Engineer will function as a resource for safety efforts on active projects and to the Safety Department and Safety Committee. This position's first project assignment will be located in Delta, Utah.

Key Responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilities and of the Safety Engineer typically include, but are not limited to:

Technical
  • Implement W.E. Oโ€™Neil Injury Illness Prevention Program on assigned projects.
  • Implement W.E. Oโ€™Neil Safety Manuel on assigned projects.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings.
  • Set up and audit project safety systems.
  • Predictive Solutions
  • SDS Binder
  • Subcontractor safety documents
  • First Aid kits, etc.
  • Assist in the development / review of site-specific safety plans
  • Assist with developing project safety goals.
  • Attend and participate in project meetings and assist in preparation / distribution of meeting minutes.
  • Perform jobsite walks / inspections.
  • Perform incident investigations.
  • Address, follow-up, and ensure closure on issues.
  • Provide safety knowledge to the project.
  • Assist in the review of subcontractor programs, plans and Job Hazard Analyses
  • Conduct jobsite safety orientations
  • Attend and participate in W.E. Oโ€™Neil Risk Management trainings
  • Participate in W.E. Oโ€™Neil networking events to build industry relationships.
  • Participate in all P.E. Trainings and P.E. Bootcamps
Management

  • Assist the Safety Department with the implementation of company programs
  • Coordinate with project / safety teams to anticipate upcoming work-activities and ensure compliance with OSHA and W.E. Oโ€™Neil IIPP
  • Discuss solutions to field problems or conflicts, and help develop practical solutions
  • Work with the project / safety teams to schedule pre-construction meetings & training
  • Research various safety topics as assigned by the safety team

Qualifications
  • Fourโ€‘year degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Construction Management, or related field or minimum 1 years of relevant project field experience.
  • Understand and effectively use company software programs, such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work nonโ€‘routine hours as needed

Physical Demands: Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to use construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction, when visiting a WEO job site. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Performing this job requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, sit, talk and hear and stand throughout the workday.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in one of WEOโ€™s California regional offices and on occasion may be required to visit the construction work site where the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud.
