Job description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate Mechanical Engineer to join our Powertrain and Electronics Battery Engineering team in San Carlos, CA. This engineer will support design & development of the Joby S4 electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle, and emerging future projects. You will be responsible for designing hardware for various systems that power and control the aircraft. This position requires a relentless drive for engineering excellence and the ability to balance complex competing objectives and priorities. The position will work cross-functionally and be responsible for the entire development cycle from early architecture through production. While this role is advertised & leveled as an early career through mid career position, we're open to senior level experience and encourage all to apply who meet the minimum requirements.

  • Design components, subassemblies, and systems
  • Perform analysis (models/simulation) to support design decisions
  • Plan/execute development tests to support design decisions
  • Work with external vendors and internal manufacturing/fabrication teams to build hardware
  • Work with the testing team to support verification testing of hardware

  • B.S. or higher in mechanical engineering
  • 2+ years of industry work experience; preferably “full-stack” with exposure to test, design, equipment/component selection, hands-on builds, bring-up and troubleshooting (can include internships, university clubs, team programs, and full-time positions)
  • Proficiency with professional 3D modeling software, preferably with Catia 3D Experience
  • Proficiency in mechanical design, materials selection, kinematics, and analysis
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Strong analytical background – able to use first principles to drive/inform design

  • M.S./Ph.D. in a relevant field of study
  • 5+ years of working experience in automotive or aerospace industry
  • Experience with Dassault Systemes CAD, specifically using generative shape design, part design, and assembly design
  • Experience with finite element tools (Abaqus)
  • Direct battery engineering experience

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $96,200 - $160,000/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
