Description:Job Summary:

As the Director of Building Codes, you will safeguard the integrity and safety of Laurens County’s infrastructure by ensuring all construction meets rigorous state and local standards. You are the primary advocate for public safety, leading a dedicated team to manage code enforcement and inspections that directly impact the growth and well-being of our community.


Top Responsibilities:

· Team Leadership: Plan, delegate, and supervise staff duties to ensure the fair and equal application of all codes and ordinances.

· Comprehensive Inspections: Conduct and oversee field inspections for residential, commercial, and industrial facilities to verify compliance with fire, building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical regulations.

· Technical Plan Review: Analyze industrial, institutional, and commercial plans to ensure code conformance and site plan requirements, including rights-of-way and buffer yards.

· Enforcement & Resolution: Manage enforcement problems, issue corrective action or stop-work orders, and testify in court regarding code violation cases.

· Public Consultation: Serve as a professional liaison for developers, engineers, and citizens to resolve complaints and provide expert guidance on construction standards.

Requirements:What you Bring:
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in construction and code enforcement is required. Direct experience in a supervisory role is essential for managing department staff and operations.
  • Education: High School Diploma or accredited GED (required). A Bachelor's Degree in Building Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or Business Administration is highly preferred.
  • Skill Highlight: Skilled in using digital cameras, architect’s rulers, and various measuring/testing devices alongside standard office software for data processing. Ability to explain complex technical procedures to diverse audiences and apply practical mathematical solutions, including fractions, ratios and algebraic equations.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Must be a Certified and Licensed Building Official under the South Carolina Building Code Council (LLR). Possession of Valid SC Driver’s License with good driving record. May be required to hold a designation as a Certified Floodplain Manager.
