Job description

SUMMARY

As an Operations Specialist Apprentice, the apprentice is responsible for completing all necessary coursework and on-the job training as outlined in the Ag Partners’ Operations Specialist Apprenticeship Appendix. The apprentice will be responsible for excellent customer service and assisting all departments by driving fertilizer tender truck, loading feed, filling anhydrous tanks, loading and unloading grain trucks, and general maintenance and housekeeping.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

(Includes the following and other duties may be assigned).

  • Following directions established for operations, maintenance and equipment of various departments in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Manager including: 
    • Driving fertilizer tender truck. 
    • Unloading and loading grain trucks. 
    • Loading feed. 
    • Filling anhydrous tanks and maintenance of anhydrous facilities. 
    • Assisting with filling bunkers with grain at harvest. 
    • Loading and unloading fertilizer. 
  • Performing general housekeeping duties, maintains clean work areas, and secures equipment and facilities when closing. 
  • Providing a high level of customer service. 
  • Promoting and adhering to the company Core Values of honesty, integrity & teamwork. 
  • Adherence to safety policies. 
  • Adherence to cooperative credit policy. 
  • Works with other cooperative staff at other locations to ensure cooperative goals are met. 
  • Present a clean and professional appearance. 
  • Promptly and regularly report to work and work overtime hours as needed. 
  • Employee is required to perform all other duties as directed. 

APPRENTICESHIP REQUIREMENTS

The term of the apprenticeship is 1 years with an OJL attainment of 2000 hours, supplemented by the minimum required 144 hours of related instruction. Apprentices shall be paid a progressively increasing schedule of wages based on either a percentage or a dollar amount of the current hourly workerwage rate, which is:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Previous experience related to grain, feed, fertilizer, chemicals and/or farms supplies is preferred. Apprentice is willing to learn how to operate ag production and other heavy equipment and be familiar with current farming practices. Must have basic computer operation experience. Willing to seek out and attend additional continuing education, seminars, classes, or other job-related education requirements or opportunities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to read aerial photo maps for proper field identification. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and weights.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

Must obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with a safe driving record . Preferred endorsements to obtain include haz-mat, air brake and tanker endorsements.

REASONING ABILITY

The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Able to deal with problems with several concrete variables in standard situations. Must be able to think quickly and perform a mental assessment of workplace hazards, take appropriate precautions, and choose appropriate PPE as dictated by need, regulation and labeling.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee is regularly required to legally operate a grain elevator manlift with the door closed, (300 lb. weight limit), climb stairs, and climb ladders to the top of the elevator (approximately an additional 30’-40’). The employee may occasionally need to climb ladders and or stairs that may range from 20’ to 180’. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in this work environments is usually loud (although not believed to exceed the eight-hour threshold for working in or around loud equipment).
