Job description

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and accredited museum in Miami, Florida. Vizcaya preserves one of the nation’s most significant historic estates while engaging diverse audiences through preservation, education, environmental stewardship, and cultural programming. The Director of Individual Gifts will help lead this landmark effort, shaping how a community invests in one of its most treasured places and building a philanthropy program with lasting impact on Miami’s cultural landscape.

Vizcaya is preparing for a five-year, $200 million Comprehensive Campaign to reimagine its future: major capital projects across the campus, program support for preservation, education, urban agriculture, arts and culture initiatives and growing endowment to sustain Vizcaya’s legacy for generations to come.

Vizcaya is owned by Miami-Dade County and is operated by the nonprofit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust, Inc. Our mission is to preserve the estate’s cultural and environmental resources to engage people in connecting with the past, understanding the present and shaping the future. Our vision is “A Home for Miami, an Inspiration for All.”

Essential Functions

•   Own the strategy, goals, and revenue results for Vizcaya’s individual giving program, driving a $25M campaign goal, with a current $5M annual giving target as the baseline.

•   Carry a personal portfolio of donors ($25,000+), managing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

•   Use membership and annual giving as entry points that identify, cultivate, and move donors along a giving pipeline, building segmentation and multiyear giving pathways into deeper philanthropy.

•   Introduce legacy giving opportunities to annual giving donors and members as part of the pipeline strategy.

•   Use donor data and prospect screening tools to identify prospects, analyze attrition, and drive retention.

•   In partnership with the Director of Membership, develop growth strategy for membership programs.

•   Prepare and manage the department’s expense budget and track progress against strategic plan KPIs.

•   Partner with the Chief Advancement Officer on donor portfolio assignments across the team.

•   Set CRM data integrity, gift processing, and acknowledgment standards.

•   Report revenue performance and KPIs to leadership on a regular cadence; attend Board and committee meetings as required.

•   Play an active role in Vizcaya’s signature fundraising events ($2M in annual revenue), integrating event strategy and guest cultivation with annual giving and campaign goals.

•   Oversee the creation, production, and distribution of donor-facing assets: website content, newsletters, Donor Impact Report, honor rolls, brochures.

General Responsibilities

•   Strengthening Vizcaya’s financial position by growing individual giving revenue and pursuing new funding opportunities.

•   Lead with a collaborative, service-oriented approach that supports strong donors, members, volunteer, and visitor experiences.

•   Serve as a senior member of the Advancement Team, reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer and managing a team of 2–3 Advancement staff, growing in preparation for the campaign.

•   Engage in and promote internal committee participation.

•   Ensure department compliance with Vizcaya policies and procedures; review staff work for accuracy and quality.

This job description is not designed to be comprehensive; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

Position Requirements

•   Bachelor’s degree in a related field; advanced degree a plus.

•   10+ years of progressively responsible experience in annual giving, membership, major gifts, or nonprofit advancement, including 5+ years of supervisory experience.

•   Proven record taking prospects through the gift cycle, from cultivation through solicitation.

•   Experience on capital or comprehensive campaign.

•   Proficiency with CRM and donor database systems.

•   Exceptional writing, relationship management, and communications skills.

Factors Vizcaya Will Consider When Evaluating Applicants and Determining Compensation

•   Depth of leadership experience in museums or mission-driven organizations.

•   Spanish, Haitian Creole, or other language skills.

Compensation

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens offers competitive compensation with generous paid leave, retirement benefits, and robust medical and other insurance for full-time employees. Salary will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and skills. The anticipated salary for this position is approximately $117,000; final compensation will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications and may be higher or lower than this amount.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

The majority of work is performed in an office setting, with regular interaction with donors, members, Board members, volunteers, and colleagues both on and off site. Occasional attendance at evening and weekend meetings, events, and public programs is expected. Vizcaya is a non-smoking environment.
