What is a director of DevOps?

A Director of DevOps is a senior IT leader responsible for overseeing the development and operations teams to ensure efficient software delivery and reliable infrastructure management. They implement strategies that promote collaboration, automation, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices. The role involves setting DevOps policies, managing teams, and aligning technology processes with business goals. Directors of DevOps often work closely with other executive leaders to drive innovation and operational excellence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director of DevOps?

To thrive as a Director of DevOps, you need deep expertise in software development, infrastructure management, and automation, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field and significant experience in DevOps leadership roles. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), infrastructure as code tools (like Terraform or Ansible), and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) is common. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills help drive cross-functional collaboration and cultural transformation. These capabilities are critical for aligning technical initiatives with business goals and ensuring scalable, reliable, and efficient delivery processes.

What are the biggest challenges a director of DevOps typically faces when leading cross-functional teams?

A Director of DevOps often encounters challenges in aligning development, operations, and security teams toward shared goals, especially in organizations transitioning from traditional practices to DevOps methodologies. Balancing the need for rapid innovation with maintaining system stability and security can be complex. Additionally, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement across departments requires strong communication and change management skills. Overcoming resistance to new tools and processes is also a common hurdle for leaders in this role.

Job description

At BILL, we believe in empowering the businesses that drive our economy. By replacing outdated financial processes with innovative tools, we help businesses—from startups to established brands—make smarter decisions and gain control of their operations. And we don’t stop there: we’re creating the future of financial automation so businesses can spend more time on what matters.

Working here means you become part of a vision-driven team that’s ready to tackle challenges and build cutting-edge solutions. We value purpose, drive, and curiosity—and we thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. Whether in one of our offices in San Jose, CA, Draper, UT, or in a remote-eligible role, BILLders collaborate to deliver real impact for businesses that need more time in their busy weeks.

BILL builds high performing teams and we seek to hire the best talent for every role. We're committed to building a workplace that fosters inclusion and diverse perspectives, valuing each person’s unique skills and experiences. We’d love to hear from you—you might be just what we’re looking for, whether in this role or another.

Make your impact within a rapidly growing Fintech Company

Join BILL as Director of Developer Experience and Infrastructure Platform and lead the engineering organization that sets the foundation for how hundreds of services are built, deployed, and operated across the company. This team is the connective tissue of BILL's engineering culture: owning the developer tooling that engineers rely on from their first line of code through production, the platform automation that keeps pace with a growing codebase, and the service platform infrastructure that makes reliability possible at scale.

BILL's platform is used every day by hundreds of thousands of small and midsize businesses managing cash flow, accounts payable, and financial operations. Your team will be responsible for keeping BILL's platform fast, reliable, secure, and exceptionally easy to build on. In this role, you will set the technical direction for developer tooling and service platform, drive the organizational change management needed to standardize how teams build and ship, and lead an AI-native developer experience strategy that fundamentally accelerates the software development lifecycle (SDLC) across the company. You will operate across the full engineering organization as both a technical authority and an influential leader.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the strategy and roadmap for BILL's AI-augmented developer platform across two core pillars: developer tooling (local development workflows, AI coding assistants, IDE context-injection, code automation, CI/CD, Code Review, and internal bots) and service platform (the infrastructure for building, maintaining, operating, and retiring services across the company's 250+ services).
  • Drive company-wide change management to standardize how engineering teams build and ship, including defining service templating, common libraries, and AI-driven guardrails that proactively intercept security vulnerabilities and compliance drift during the generation phase.
  • Lead, grow, and develop a team of engineers and engineering managers, partnering with the current team to restore stability and direction following org changes, and setting a high bar for craft, accountability, and AI tool fluency.
  • Scale the developer experience: architecting the infrastructure required to embed coding assistants into daily workflows, optimizing knowledge base codebase context, and deploying agentic workflows to automate routine refactoring and migrations.
  • Optimize the engineering "inner loop" by owning the strategy, tooling, and runtime configurations for local developer environments (workstations/laptops). Deliver fast feedback loops, containerized local environments, and robust containerized strategies that enable engineers to reliably build, debug, and test complex, multi-service architectures locally before code ever reaches a shared test environment.
  • Operate as a senior technical leader and cross-functional partner, collaborating with engineering managers, architects, product, and the CTO to align platform investments with the company strategy.
  • Define and track the metrics that matter: developer experience satisfaction, deployment frequency, system reliability, time-to-productivity for new engineers, and AI adoption metrics, using data to prioritize and communicate progress to senior leadership and build a data-driven culture.
  • Represent the developer platform org in executive-level conversations, translating technical complexity into clear business impact and building trust with stakeholders across engineering and beyond.

We’d love to chat if you have:

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering or infrastructure, with at least 5 years leading platform, DevX, or infrastructure teams at a Director level or equivalent scope.
  • Proven track record of implementing, scaling, and measuring AI-assisted development tools (e.g., AI pair programmers, automated code review agents) across a scaled engineering organization (300+ engineers).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change at scale: you have owned the rollout of engineering standards, tooling, or platform migrations that required buy-in across a distributed engineering organization.
  • Extensive technical depth and architectural leadership in modern DevOps practices operating in the cloud: Specifically featuring production-scale experience with Kubernetes (k8s), ArgoCD, and GitLab CI/CD platforms (AWS environment preferred). You possess the credibility to deeply engage with principal engineers on pipeline optimization, build fleet management, and deployment strategies.
  • Deep technical and strategic mastery of modern coding assistant technologies (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) and their underlying mechanics. You pair this technical depth with a sophisticated understanding of how to safely deploy these tools within a regulated fintech environment.
  • Strong executive communication skills: you can present a system design retrospective, a platform strategy, or a staffing ask to a CTO or board-level audience with the same clarity you use with your team.
  • Experience operating in a complex, multi-team engineering environment where influence matters as much as authority, and where aligning stakeholders with competing priorities is part of the job.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience building internal custom AI tooling, fine-tuning models for coding tasks, or building custom RAG pipelines to feed internal codebase context to developer agents.
  • Background in fintech, payments, or other regulated, high-availability environments where reliability and security are first-class engineering concerns.

Our ranges for each role and job level are based on a variety of factors including candidate experience, expertise, and geographic location and may vary from the amounts listed below. The role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending & health savings account, paid holidays, paid time off, and other company benefits.
