Job description

Contemporaries is a government contracting firm supporting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in its efforts to hire a Biomedical Engineer specializing in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and MRI image processing.

This position will support the development of advanced software and AI solutions for pediatric MRI research. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with machine learning/deep learning, medical image processing, MRI reconstruction or enhancement, and scientific software development. The role will work closely with engineers, MRI physicists, researchers, clinicians, and biostatisticians to develop reliable tools that improve MRI image quality and enable quantitative analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop AI-based MRI image reconstruction, denoising, artifact-reduction, and image-enhancement pipelines, particularly for low-field MRI.
  • Develop and train machine learning and deep-learning models for MRI reconstruction, image enhancement, segmentation, and quantitative analysis.
  • Build software capable of extracting measurements such as fat, lean mass, and fluid measurements from MRI images.
  • Develop software infrastructure for automated tissue segmentation and compositional quantification.
  • Build and maintain reproducible ML pipelines, including version control, experiment tracking, testing, validation, and documentation.
  • Develop data-management workflows for pediatric imaging datasets while supporting appropriate data privacy and security requirements.
  • Optimize models and software for deployment within available research or point-of-care computing environments.
  • Validate AI/software performance against reference standards and established imaging methods.
  • Collaborate with MRI physicists, biomedical engineers, pediatric clinical investigators, researchers, and biostatisticians to ensure software meets scientific and clinical requirements.
  • Support technical documentation, validation materials, and information needed for research and regulatory/IRB review.
  • Provide technical updates, progress reports, presentations, and contributions to scientific manuscripts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff or trainees involved in MRI-focused machine learning projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical/scientific field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing machine-learning or deep-learning models for medical imaging or scientific applications.
  • Strong programming experience, particularly with Python and common machine-learning/deep-learning frameworks.
  • Experience with medical image processing, MRI reconstruction, image enhancement, segmentation, or quantitative imaging.
  • Experience developing reproducible scientific software using practices such as version control, testing, documentation, containerization, and experiment tracking.
  • Experience managing or processing large imaging datasets and developing automated data pipelines.
  • Understanding of model validation, performance evaluation, and optimization.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary biomedical, clinical, academic, or research environment is highly preferred.
