Description
The Lab Assistant in Marine Engineering is a part-time position. This position is responsible for keeping the equipment in the Marine Engineering and Seamanship department in safe working condition and organized. This position typically maintains a 5-20 hours work week; however, hours vary according to need. This position reports to the Director, Marine Science and Technology.
Examples of Duties
1. Maintain and organize equipment in the gasoline, diesel, fiberglass, and corrosion labs.
2. Assists in organization of laboratory spaces.
3. Prepares and organizes equipment and materials necessary for marine engineering faculty. 4. Participates in marine engineering courses, as necessary.
5. Maintains regularly scheduled hours to provide lab and research assistance to the Division of Marine Science and Technology.
6. Tracks inventory and prepares supply orders in a timely fashion for the instructional staff and the Director.
7. Assists marine engineering faculty and administrations, as necessary.
8. Participates in departmental training, as required.
9. Operates equipment to support instructional programs.
10. Assists in all College enrollment management efforts as appropriate.
11. Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Knowledge of marine engineering laboratory techniques and laboratory safety.
- Knowledge of and experience with machinery used in the marine engineering lab areas.
- Knowledge of diesel and/or gasoline engines.
- Ability to carry out job duties with little or no direct supervision.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Skill in selecting, preparing, and controlling equipment to be used in the laboratory.
- Ability to commit to continued effort to stay current in program area.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to communicate on a regular basis with instructional staff to ensure that labs are clean, safe and prepared for student use.
- Currently enrolled in the Associate in Applied Science in Marine Engineering, Management, and Seamanship or the Marine Propulsion Technology College Credit Certificate program.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Successful completion of MTE1001C or MTE1053C with a C or higher.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Yamaha Introduction to Outboard Engines certification preferred.
- Moderate (up to 75 lbs.) lifting and carrying.
- Pulling, pushing, reaching.
- Walking, standing, kneeling, bending, balancing, stooping, and climbing.
- Works inside and outside with chemicals, solvents, oils, and moving equipment.
