Position Summary

Be part of a Power Delivery team responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining electrical equipment within Grant County PUD’s transmission and distribution facilities. This position is responsible for providing knowledge and expertise related to substations, transmission and SCADA automation and other supporting facilities within Grant County PUD’s Power Delivery Department.

Depending on level and assignment, incumbents may:

  • Support, lead, or direct capital execution of projects as it relates to Substation design, materials, and equipment.
  • Participate in, lead, or direct processes focusing on operations and engineering practices that drive strong reliability and performance.
  • Research, design, and support the implementation of new and upgraded equipment throughout the substation, with guidance appropriate to level.
  • Coordinate with different stakeholders and provide input to substation project plans.
  • Collaborate with responsible groups and facilitate smooth transition of the design to implementation.
  • Develop design requirements relating to the application of equipment in substations.
  • Develop technical specification and standards for ordering equipment and parts, and utilize new technology and best practices during design.
  • Provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed.
  • Engage with manufacturers and suppliers, including plant/factory visits and project site visits, and represent the Substation Engineering department on new equipment and vendor evaluations.
  • Engage in industry forums and events, including IEEE, SEE, CIGRE, etc.
  • Facilitate Substation equipment specification and drawings review; coordinate with manufacturers and vendors to ensure adherence to company requirements.
  • Review existing materials, components, and design standards for process improvements, cost savings, etc.
  • Perform independent and/or collaborative research to find innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions to operational problems, as appropriate for level.
  • Develop training for engineers/partner groups and assist less experienced colleagues in planning, conceptual/detail engineering, and the field, as appropriate for level.
  • Support the project team at commission meetings and community open houses, as appropriate for level.
  • Assist with, interpret, or communicate company policies and procedures to internal stakeholders and external project support partners, as appropriate for level.

Shared Equipment Scope

Equipment includes, but is not limited to:

  • High/Medium/Low Voltage Distribution systems.

Level Scope

Works under guidance while learning project management procedures, engineering calculations, and troubleshooting methodologies. Researches and analyzes technical information and data to prepare reports; meets with contract personnel, Grant PUD employees, and other representatives to resolve problems and concerns and answer questions on issues/projects; and assists with field inspections of projects for conformance to approved plans with the assistance of a more experienced team member.

Prepares technical documentation, including Engineering Work Packages, build material lists, and generating new drawings or revising existing drawings. Gains basic understanding about equipment, inspects equipment in the field, develops troubleshooting skillset, participates in activities such as installation, quality control, and production, specifies equipment, works with vendors, and obtains quotes as needed.

Supports capital execution of projects as it relates to low impact Substation design, materials, and equipment. Participates in processes focusing on operations and engineering practices that drive strong reliability and performance. Develops basic understanding about equipment listed in the shared equipment scope.

Researches and supports the implementation of new and upgraded equipment throughout the substation, with considerable guidance from supervisors and peers. Provides project management support for small-sized projects. Gains knowledge in skills related to best industry practice, Utility Standards, Codes, or other Legal Standards used to support electrical engineering projects and safe and reliable equipment operation.

Supports capital execution of projects as it relates to Substation design, materials, and equipment. Leads the development of processes focusing on operations and engineering practices that drive strong reliability and performance with assistance. Coordinates with different stakeholders, provides basic input to substation project plans, and facilitates smooth transition of the design to implementation with support.

Develops design requirements relating to the application of equipment in substations. Develops technical specification and standards for ordering equipment and parts and utilizes new technology and best practices during design with assistance. Provides technical expertise as needed, engages with manufacturers and suppliers, represents Substation Engineering on new equipment and vendor evaluations, and engages in industry forums and events.

Develops design requirements relating to the application of equipment in substations and assists with interpretation and communication of company policies and procedures to internal stakeholders and external project support partners.

  • All levels require a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field OR equivalent relevant experience (4 years in lieu of degree)
