Bachelor's degree in a Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, Cytotechnologist, or Histotechnologist plus four (4) years of related experience in area(s) to be managed.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: Active credentials with one of the following:

-American Association of Bioanalyst (AAB) - MT

-American Medical Technologist (AMT) - MT

-National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) - CLS or CLSP (CG)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of laboratory andexperience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations. Knowledge of management operations.
Responsibilities

  • Assists manager in implementing effective quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures. Participates in performance improvement and test utilization initiatives. Ensures that performance levels are maintained throughout the testing process using quality control records and monitoring instruments and results. Responsible for supervision of all job description duties, for all outside laboratories as well as internal labs.
  • Develops plans for validation of all processes. Verifies precision and accuracy of test procedures. Maintains current written standard operating procedures and policies in UMMC's document center. Assists with maintaining regulatory and compliance standards and provides technical support during site inspections.
  • Interviews and hires new personnel. Administers discipline with assistance from manager and HRBP. Conducts annual performance evaluations. Provides technical staff development within areas of expertise, including direct observation of performance. Facilitates the following programs for personnel: ninety-day and six-month competencies for employees; annual technical competency assessment; new policy/procedure training and implementation; ongoing assessment of staff's problem solving skills; continuing education.
  • Assists the managers and medical directors with technical research, evaluation, and selection of new procedures and instrumentation. Prepares, reviews, and standardizes system technical testing policies and procedures. Assists in development of business case analysis of test offerings.
  • Provides technical support on financial evaluations for both new and current testing procedure, instrumentation, and reagent evaluations. Gathers data as requested.
  • Makes recommendations for changing procedures, instrumentation, consolidating testing work stations, or changing testing locations when appropriate, to increase cost effectiveness.
  • Serves as a technical resource for all testing sites on all shifts, being accessible for consultation as needed. Assists in troubleshooting, resolves technical issues, and initiates appropriate corrective action when performance specifications are not being met. Ensures system is functioning properly before patient results are released. Provides problem solving technical support and consultation to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Accepts responsibility for area's quality, safety, inspection and audit performance, productivity, financial performance, contract compliance and capital equipment selection.
  • Serves as communication liaison within laboratory and outside as needed. Promotes teamwork and customer service. Effectively communicates using appropriate verbal and written skills. Ensures official communications are timely, complete, relevant, and appropriate in content and format.
