Job Summary
The Program on Intergroup Relations invites applications for a full-time academic year position as a Lecturer III to begin Winter Term 2027, to teach two courses each semester plus administrative duties in lieu of one course per semester. (Regular, full-time teaching load is three courses per semester). IGR courses are housed in the Applied Liberal Arts (ALA) division of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and are often cross-listed with Psychology and Sociology. There may be additional opportunities for spring/summer teaching or administrative duties. The lecturer will teach any IGR courses, and may propose new courses. More information about these courses is available at the following website: https://igr.umich.edu/courses. Additional duties in lieu of one course per semester are described below.
Responsibilities*
The candidate will provide classroom instruction to undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Lecturers are expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine instructional matters.
Additional duties include participation in unit, college- and university-wide activities.
  • Developing new IGR curricula for first-year and new students, including one-credit mini-courses and other 2 - 4 credit courses that help UM students learn skills in dialogic pedagogy
  • Liaising with campus partners (who are also focused on first year and new student experience) to foster collaboration opportunities
  • Expanding IGR's co-curricular offerings with a specific focus on first-year and transfer student success, including the co-development of the IGR Theme Hall

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Serve as an academic advisor for the IGR minor
  • Serve on the IGR Curriculum Committee
  • Participate in selecting student peer facilitators
  • Maintain a professional and academic knowledge base including theory, new research, trends, and best practices in intergroup relations in higher education. Establish/provide an inclusive classroom climate
  • Possible travel on behalf of IGR to other universities to consult in establishing intergroup dialogue programs nationally
  • Co-facilitate IGR program offerings as needed (e.g., Community of Scholars)
  • Mentor undergraduate students in small to medium-sized research projects.
  • While a scholarly profile is not required for Lec III positions, there are many opportunities for scholarship related to research and writing about intergroup dialogues, pedagogical innovations, and partnership innovations. With IGR's Working Paper Series, the new Lecturer III will be encouraged to work with undergraduates to write for the series that may lead to publication as book chapters or in refereed journals.

Required Qualifications*
  • The candidate must hold a terminal degree in Psychology, Education, Sociology, Social Work, or in a closely related field. An MA in Educational Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is required. A Ph.D. is preferred.
  • 3 years of experience working in an academic student setting
  • Experience working with diverse student population
  • The candidate must have experience with teaching courses devoted to intergroup relations theory and intergroup dialogue pedagogy and in working with a variety of culturally and ethnically diverse populations.
  • Experience with engaged pedagogy and experiential teaching
  • Demonstrated success cultivating inclusive communities that foster students' sense of belonging
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication, attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of experiences and identities.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Ph.D. in related field
  • Substantial experience in intergroup dialogue pedagogy, social justice education, and experiential teaching. Expertise in intergroup relations theory and intergroup dialogue pedagogy
  • Experience enacting a pedagogy of care, anti-racist pedagogy, inclusive teaching methods, and/or trauma-informed teaching would be preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to partnerships between academic and student life.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple projects and prioritize deadlines

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
