Job description

Medical Director

Meritus Personal Health Institute (MPHI)

Full-time  |  Target Start: October 2026  |  Hagerstown, Maryland

About the Meritus Personal Health Institute

Meritus Health is launching the Meritus Personal Health Institute (MPHI) — a bold, first-of-its-kind population health precision medicine initiative rooted in the rural communities of Western Maryland. Backed by a $24M initial investment, MPHI will enroll 10,000 residents in the program and launch a longitudinal study combining whole genome sequencing, advanced labs and imaging, pharmacogenomics, metabolic profiling, and personalized health coaching, at no cost to the patient. By removing the cost barriers, we believe this will truly be a pioneering initiative, equitably providing the most advanced personalized care to an entire population.

The aspirational goal: increase healthy life expectancy in rural Maryland by three years, while establishing Meritus as the national model for rural precision health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the clinical leader of MPHI from day one
  • Lead a 10-person team including APPs, health coaches, technicians and navigators
  • Design clinical protocols, SOPs, and the 2.5-hour participant intake workflow
  • Direct Epic integration for pharmacogenomic (PGx) prescribing alerts, referral triggers, and information sharing with other members of the care team.
  • Partner with Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM) faculty on publications and grant applications
  • Interface with the research department as a scientific leader in the studies that follow the clinical work of the department
  • Engage Meritus physicians across the continuum of care
  • Own quality and outcomes tracking, and present annual progress to the MPHI Governance team
  • Support revenue development through research grants, private foundations, and value-based care arrangements

Testing Portfolio

The Medical Director will oversee a comprehensive, multimodal assessment protocol including:

  • Whole genome or exome sequencing and polygenic risk scoring across cardiovascular, oncologic, metabolic, and neurological domains
  • Pharmacogenomic profiling
  • Coronary artery calcium scoring
  • DEXA body composition and bone density
  • VO max / cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • Advanced lipid panels: Lp(a), ApoB, NMR particle sizing, insulin resistance phenotyping
  • Microbiome analysis, nutrient profiling, heavy metal testing
  • Frailty index, cognitive function, circadian rhythm and sleep assessment
  • Wearable integration for longitudinal monitoring
  • Annual total body MRI screening in high risk patients

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD or DO with active licensure (or eligibility) in Maryland
  • Demonstrated ability to lead clinical programs and multidisciplinary teams
  • Familiarity with genomics and advanced diagnostics

Strongly preferred:

  • Board certification in a primary care related specialty
  • Research credibility
  • Experience with Epic and clinical informatics
  • Passion for rural health and increasing healthy life years in underserved communities
  • Experience in lifestyle medicine and precision medicine
  • Strong communicator comfortable engaging patients, physicians, and academic partners

Why Meritus Health

  • Institutional commitment: $24M+ invested with board-level support and a defined 3-year milestone plan
  • Academic partnership: deep integration with Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine for research, training, and publication
  • Greenfield opportunity: build the program, name the model, define the science
  • Community impact: serve a rural population with state-of-the-art precision tools
  • National visibility: pathway to becoming a Framingham-scale longitudinal study and replication model for rural health systems nationally
