Job description


Boston University's Office of Research seeks an Associate Director, Convergence and Interdisciplinary Research to support the scientific and programmatic development of the University's convergence research initiatives. This role focuses on building interdisciplinary research teams, shaping high-impact scientific directions, and managing internal convergence funding programs, including planning and seed grants. Position reports to Director of Research Development. Key Responsibilities Include: Identify and connect faculty across disciplines, schools, and campuses to build high-functioning, cross-disciplinary research teams Design and lead convergence workshops, idea labs, and retreats to catalyze new collaborations Lead the design and execution of convergence planning and seed grant competitions Provide ongoing scientific and strategic mentoring to funded planning and seed grant teams Monitor scientific progress and outcomes of funded projects Identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities across the convergence portfolio.
Required Skills
  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field (STEM, social sciences, or related interdisciplinary area) and 5+ years' work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary research or team science.
  • Strong understanding of the federal research funding landscape (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOE, ARPA-H).
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Experience:
  • Leading or participating in large, multi-investigator research initiatives.
  • Experience with internal funding programs or research strategy development.
  • Familiarity with research development and proposal processes.
