Job description

At HDR, we specialize in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. While we are most well-known for adding beauty and structure to communities through high-performance buildings and smart infrastructure, we provide much more than that. We create an unshakable foundation for progress because our multidisciplinary teams also include scientists, economists, builders, analysts and artists. That's why we believe diversity is our greatest strength. HDR is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer.

HDR is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Michigan-based Power Generation team. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be joining a highly capable, multi-discipline team that supports power and energy projects primarily within the utility, IPP, industrial, institutional, and municipal sectors.
Preferred candidates will have a working knowledge of industrial- and utility-scale power generation systems as required to carry out the typical job duties which include: mechanical equipment/pipe sizing; equipment/piping layout considerations; construction document development (P&IDs, system layout/installation drawings and specifications); engineer/equipment vendor submittal reviews, vendor/contractor communications; technical writing (reports, procurement specifications, etc.); code reviews; site visits; project planning; and working within an assigned budget and schedule. Significant experience with the design and specification of power generation fluid systems including steam, condensate, fuel gas, cooling water, compressed air, and similar systems is preferred. Experience with utilization of software for detailed fluid analysis or modeling is a plus.
The candidate will be encouraged and trained to develop from a mechanical or lead engineer to a project engineer and ultimately into a project manager or engineering manager. Most tasks will be done in a collaborative manner involving engineers and designers from several other disciplines. The candidate will be expected to share the benefits of his or her experience with others, including the mentoring of younger engineers. Communication and leadership skills as required to direct a small team of engineers and designers are also desired.
The position will require travel for site surveys, technical conferences, client meetings and monitoring of construction. Travel is typically less than 10%.
