Job description

Robert Half is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to manage and support enterprise database environments with a primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server. This role is responsible for ensuring database availability, performance, security, and reliability for critical business applications. The position requires a high level of independence, strong troubleshooting ability, and collaboration with development and infrastructure teams.


This is a direct hire role with our partner in Madison, WI.


Key Responsibilities

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments to ensure performance, reliability, and availability
  • Provide secondary support for Oracle database environments
  • Perform routine database maintenance including backups, restores, patching, upgrades, and health checks
  • Diagnose and resolve database performance issues, availability problems, and data integrity concerns
  • Design and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity solutions, including regular testing
  • Implement and maintain database security and access controls
  • Partner with application developers and infrastructure teams to support database-dependent systems
  • Support database platform upgrades, modernization efforts, and lifecycle management
  • Contribute to operational reporting related to backups, availability, and system health
  • Participate in on-call support for production database systems
  • Document database standards, procedures, and configurations



  • 5+ years of experience administering enterprise-level database environments
  • Advanced administration and performance tuning for Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience supporting high-availability, business-critical systems
  • Experience implementing automation or process improvements within database operations
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in complex database environments
  • Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning
  • Knowledge of database security and auditing practices
  • Experience with automation and scripting (such as PowerShell, T-SQL, PL/SQL, or similar tools)
  • Familiarity with database monitoring and alerting tools
  • Working knowledge of Oracle database administration (preferred)
