Job description

Meta is seeking a Mechanical Subject Matter Expert to support the design, operation, and optimization of environmental and water systems across its global data center infrastructure. In this role, you will serve as a technical authority on mechanical systems including cooling infrastructure, water treatment, HVAC, and fluid distribution systems that are critical to maintaining data center reliability and efficiency. You will partner with engineering, construction, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement in water usage effectiveness, thermal management, and environmental compliance across Meta's data center portfolio.
Mechanical Subject Matter Expert, Data Center Environmental Systems Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary technical authority on data center mechanical systems, with a focus on environmental controls, water treatment, and cooling infrastructure including chillers, cooling towers, and fluid distribution systems
  • Develop and maintain standards, specifications, and best practices for water and environmental mechanical systems across the global data center portfolio
  • Conduct root cause analysis and failure mode investigations for mechanical and environmental system incidents, driving corrective and preventive action plans
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to water usage effectiveness metrics, including optimization of cooling tower chemistry, blowdown cycles, and recirculating water systems
  • Collaborate with design and construction teams to review mechanical engineering drawings, specifications, and commissioning plans for new data center builds and retrofits
  • Partner with environmental health and safety teams to ensure mechanical systems meet regulatory requirements for water discharge, chemical handling, and environmental compliance
  • Provide technical guidance to operations engineers and technicians on maintenance procedures, system troubleshooting, and equipment lifecycle management
  • Lead cross-functional working groups to evaluate emerging cooling technologies and water conservation strategies applicable to hyperscale data center environments
  • Develop and deliver technical training programs on environmental and water mechanical systems for operations and engineering personnel
  • Support capacity planning and risk assessments for mechanical infrastructure, identifying vulnerabilities and recommending mitigation strategies

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience collaborating with design, construction, and regulatory compliance teams on mechanical infrastructure projects
  • 6+ years of experience with cooling infrastructure systems including chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and associated water treatment and chemical dosing systems
  • Experience conducting root cause analysis and driving corrective action for mechanical system failures in operational environments
  • 6+ years of experience in mechanical engineering or operations with a focus on data center or large-scale industrial environmental and water systems
  • Experience developing technical standards, specifications, or engineering guidelines for mechanical or environmental systems in mission-critical facilities

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE data center thermal guidelines, cooling system commissioning standards, and environmental regulatory frameworks governing water discharge and chemical use
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience with water usage effectiveness optimization strategies and sustainability programs in hyperscale data center environments
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Experience evaluating and deploying alternative cooling technologies such as direct liquid cooling, adiabatic cooling, or closed-loop water-free systems
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
