Job description

The Assistant Professor of Teaching, Dance position is a full-time non-tenure track position. The August to May academic year commences on August 17, 2026.

The Department offers the B.F.A. degree in Theatre with concentrations in Acting, Dance, Dance Science, Entertainment Design and Technology, and Musical Theatre, as well as M.F.A. degrees in Directing and Entertainment Design and Technology. The performance spaces are supported with a complement of well equipped, on-site production shops furnished with modern technology. The Department consists of twelve full-time faculty and five full-time staff persons.

The University is located in a large urban center of Tennessee and has an enrollment of approximately 19,500 (Fall 2025).

M.F.A. in Dance or equivalent required, as well as previous experience teaching dance technique classes at the college level and experience/demonstrated ability in performance and/or choreography.  Also required is a demonstrated commitment to student mentoring and development suitable for a professional training program offering the B.F.A. degrees in Dance and Dance Science. The successful candidate will demonstrate willingness to bring to this environment professional, innovative, and collegial contributions in both teaching and service.

Possible teaching responsibilities include a variety of technique classes (which could include ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, world dance forms, and other techniques of the selectee's specialty). Depending on qualifications and interest, the selectee could also choreograph and/or direct productions within the Department of Theatre and Dance and/or serve as producer of dance concerts.  Service will include assigned committee work, academic advising of B.F.A. students, and collaborating with the faculty to support the department's goals (including examining the possibility of reinstituting its K-12 certification program).
