Founding Tax Preparer (CPA)

CoinLedger

Job description

CoinLedger | Remote (US) | Full-Time

Build a tax firm from zero — with thousands of warm leads waiting

CoinLedger is the leading crypto tax software platform. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people use CoinLedger to calculate their crypto taxes — and every year, a huge portion of them ask us the same question: "Can you just do my whole return for me?"

We're finally saying yes. CoinLedger is launching a full-service tax preparation firm, and we're hiring one person to build it with us.

This is not a staff preparer job at an established firm. This is the founding hire. You'll work directly with CoinLedger's executive team to stand up the firm from scratch — the infrastructure, the technology, the compliance framework, the processes — and then run point on delivering returns when filing season hits.

The vision: an AI-native tax firm

There's a window in time right now to build the first generation of truly AI-native professional services firms. Not traditional practices with AI bolted on, but firms designed from day one around what modern AI can actually do. Tax prep is one of the clearest opportunities on the board, and CoinLedger is extremely well-positioned to take advantage of this.

We are predominantly a team of technologists — engineers and builders who have spent years shipping tax software at scale and who have the chops to bring an AI-native firm to life. What we're looking for is the other half of the equation: a real tax professional with the depth and knowledge to own the tax side of the house.

You bring the expertise of someone who has taken hundreds of returns from intake to e-file; we bring the engineering muscle to turn that expertise into systems. Together, we build a firm where AI handles as much of the return as it credibly can and human judgment is applied exactly where it matters most.

If you've ever looked at how your current firm operates and thought *"most of this could be automated, and nobody here is even trying"* — this role was written for you.

What you'll actually do

Year one, before filing season:

  • Work with the CoinLedger executive team to stand up the firm's legal, business, and operational structure
  • Serve as the responsible official on our EFIN application and hold signing authority as the paid preparer on client returns
  • Lead the compliance and regulatory buildout: IRC §7216 consent flows, FTC Safeguards Rule requirements, state-level registrations, and data security practices
  • Build the firm's SOPs from a blank page: intake, workpapers, review standards, e-file procedures, client communication
  • Partner with our engineering and AI teams to design the human-in-the-loop return pipeline — deciding where AI does the work, where humans verify, and how we measure quality

During filing season:

  • Prepare, review, and sign individual returns end to end — including crypto-heavy activity, Schedule C self-employment, K-1s, and multi-state filings
  • Handle client-facing communication and manage the client experience
  • Continuously feed what you learn back into the AI pipeline so every return makes the next one faster

Long term:

  • Grow into a leadership role as the firm scales — you're the first hire, not the last
Who we're looking for

Hard requirements:

  • Active EA or CPA credential in good standing
  • Willingness to serve as the signing paid preparer and EFIN responsible official — you're comfortable putting your name on the work
  • Full-cycle individual return experience: you know how to take a 1040 from intake to e-file acceptance, including Schedule C, K-1s, and multi-state returns, and you know the tools and stack of a working tax prep firm inside and out
  • Working knowledge of cryptocurrency tax reporting: capital gains/losses, cost basis methods, staking and mining income, and the realities of messy exchange data
  • Genuine fluency with modern AI tools — you actively use tools like Claude Code, Codex, and ChatGPT in your work today, and you're excited to push them further
  • US-based
The archetype:
  • You're early-to-mid career, hungry, and a little restless. You've done a few seasons (or more) of serious tax work and you're sick of the corporate grind — the bureaucracy, the billable-hour theater, the legacy software, the resistance to change
  • You want to build something and prove yourself, not climb a ladder someone else built
  • You're a self-starter who's comfortable with ambiguity — there's no playbook here; you're writing it
  • You think like an operator, not just a preparer: process design, compliance, and technology genuinely interest you
What we offer
  • Competitive compensation, matched to the caliber of person we're hiring
  • Real upside: ground-floor economic participation in a firm backed by a significant, built-in stream of warm leads from CoinLedger's existing customer base (100,000+)
  • Health benefits
  • Fully remote (US)
  • Direct access to and mentorship from CoinLedger's founding and executive team
  • Target start: Fall 2026
How to apply

Send us your resume along with the following:

1. Document of your credential (EA or CPA) and a snapshot of your return prep experience

2. A written note containing a specific example of how you've used AI tools to make tax or accounting work faster or better

3. A short Loom style video explaining why "founding hire at an AI-native tax firm" is the job you've been looking for

Generic applications get generic results. Show us you're the person who reads "AI-native tax firm built from zero" and thinks *that's exactly what I've been waiting for.*
