Job description

As a member of the Costume Shop production team, the Sample Maker will construct prototype costume garments through collaboration with costume designers and technical designers, while contributing to the Costume Shop theater build as a production team member.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Successfully construct original prototype costumes that achieve the vision of the director and costume designer; contribute to highly collaborative technical meetings.
  • Ensure the technical instructions for the costume garment assembly are free from flaws in advance of starting the production, cut, and sew process, ensuring success in costume manufacturing process.
  • Troubleshoot all samples for effective fabrication, mechanics, fit, and ease of construction.
  • Provide written feedback regarding assembly details for instructional documentation.
  • Provide guidance to sewing team regarding construction details and best practices by reviewing sample construction notes and experiences in production process meetings.
  • Contribute to the costume build by supporting the seamstress team or the cutting and patternmaking team as needed; participate in fittings & alterations and show opening seasons.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Prerequisites:

  • Successful candidate will show proven expertise in one of two job skills tracks: tailor or master seamstress, or first hand and patternmaker, with skills specific to garment and/or costume construction techniques
  • Consistently demonstrate expert problem-solving skills and tenacity to complete complex projects in a timely manner
  • Possess excellent communication skills with keen self-awareness in highly collaborative and instructional situations within the team
  • High level of commitment to teamwork and a strong desire to promote cooperation, encouragement, and excellence in all interactions with team members
  • Proven ability to work quickly and accurately within aggressive timeline constraints, while updating documentation and paperwork with extraordinary attention to detail and clarity of thought
  • Ability to pivot job responsibilities as workflow changes occur and work effectively as a production team member for costume build

The physical demands of this position are active in nature. You will be expected to be on your feet frequently, walk and stand regularly, sit regularly, work indoors, use step stools, operate small machinery and power tools, and frequently lift/exert up to 50 lb.s of force.
