Structural Engineer

Western Partitions, Inc. (WPI) is one of the largest and most reputable interior and exterior contracting firms in the US. WPI provides superior contracting services for drywall, prefabrication, metal studs, acoustical systems, wall panels, fireproofing, firestopping, stucco, claddings, painting, windows, doors/frames/hardware, and more.

Headquartered in Lake Oswego, Oregon, WPI also has offices in Wilsonville, Eugene, Seattle, Reno, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Boise, Phoenix, and Spokane. WPI serves the Pacific Northwest, Mountain states, Southwest, as well as Ohio, Hawaii, Alaska, and other regions determined by our growing national customer base.

WPI is a cold formed steel contractor with its own in-house engineering and design department. You will be collaborating directly with the field and operations personnel who are building the designs you create. This department emphasizes a well-rounded work/like balance.

Job Description

The primary responsibility will be preparing construction drawings for a wide variety of projects involving cold formed steel. Major WPI projects include exterior curtain walls, interior partitions and ceiling, prefabricated wall panels, structural ceilings, and data center containment. Our major industries are healthcare, higher education, mission critical data centers, and other commercial construction.

This is a unique role in that you will be working directly with the project foremen, superintendents, and project managers who are also your co-workers. This position bridges the gap between engineering and construction. If you are interested in working more on the construction side of the industry, this position may be right for you.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Strong familiarity with cold formed steel design. Including but not limited to curtain walls, load bearing walls, floor and ceiling framing, connections, and AISI standards.
  • Strong familiarity with cold formed steel construction methods.
  • Working knowledge of structural steel member and connection design including AISC standards. Familiarity with anchor bolt design according to ACI 318.
  • Familiarity with IBC and ASCE codes. Able to calculate wind and seismic loads on structures and components.
  • Solid understanding of design software used in office. (Currently Revit, CFS Designer, Risa Suite, and others)
  • Ability to read and understand Architectural, Structural, and other trade drawings and specifications.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have experience with cold formed steel prefabrication or data center construction.

You day to day tasks may involve the following:

  • Work on typical WPI projects: exterior and interior framing, ceilings, load bearing strut. May require review but expected to work independently.
  • Communicate directly with internal and external team members, including those in the field. Attend project meetings with internal team and the project design team.
  • Prepare drawings for shop drawing submittals. Work with WPI BIM and drafting team.
  • Prepare calculation packages for submitting to project design team and local jurisdictions
  • Participate in bid reviews and estimating new projects
  • Act as liaison with relevant project professional staff, such as Architect of Record or Engineer of Record.
  • Monitor and inspect work in progress to verify systems are built per engineered drawings.
  • Support field operations. Such as translating structural drawings and specifications for the field team. Preparing drawings for site team use to make layouts easier. Creating engineered sketches to show to special inspectors. And many more. Site visits are rare but may be requested.
  • Progress your knowledge of cold formed steel or other engineering topics.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in engineering design. All experience levels are welcome to apply.
  • Prior knowledge or work experience with cold formed steel framing.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgement, problem-solving ability, self-starting, and ability to prioritize based on relevant factors.
  • Ability to prioritize personal workload and recognize priority conflicts and seek guidance for resolution.

Preferred Requirements

  • Licensed PE or SE
  • Local to office location.
  • Experience with prefabrication and modular construction.

Note: This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. This is an exempt position.
