Job description

Job Title: Director, Code & Zoning

Department: Code & Zoning Services
Reports To: Executive Leadership Team
Location: Metro NY Area


Position Overview:


We are seeking an accomplished and entrepreneurial Director of Code & Zoning to lead, grow, and scale our Code and Zoning division. This individual will oversee all aspects of code analysis, zoning consultation, and compliance strategies for clients across multiple jurisdictions. The ideal candidate is not only technically proficient-alicensed professional (PE, RA, or equivalent)-but also possesses strong business acumen and client relationship management skills.

This is a client-facing leadership role responsible for driving both project execution and revenue growth. The Director will play a key role in business development, strategic partnerships, and expanding our footprint in the code and zoning market.

Must be willing to be employed directly by our company on a W2 basis. No third-party agencies, C2C, or 1099 inquiries, please.


Key Responsibilities:


Leadership & Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Code & Zoning team, ensuring technical excellence and operational efficiency.
  • Establish scalable processes and systems to support growth and deliver consistent client outcomes.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal departments to integrate code and zoning consultation with broader company services.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, providing technical expertise as well as strong sales competencies to shape the future of our code and zoning practice.

Technical Expertise

  • Provide expert guidance on zoning resolutions, building codes and land use regulations (local laws that govern how land can be developed and used, primarily through zoning ordinances and comprehensive plans)
  • A deep understanding and entree into NYC DOB (especially with CCD-1 approvals).
  • Oversee code and zoning reviews, feasibility analysis, and compliance assessments with a business growth mindset.
  • Support clients through regulatory submissions and interactions with municipal agencies.

Business Development & Client Relations

  • Serve as the primary client contact for code and zoning engagements, ensuring superior service delivery.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within existing and new client accounts.
  • Develop proposals, present to clients, and drive upselling of related services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with city agencies, industry partners, and professional associations to strengthen the firm's network and influence.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, or related field.
  • Professional license (PE, RA, AICP, etc.) mandatory qualification.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in code compliance, zoning, or building regulatory environments, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record in managing and growing a technical or consulting division, including revenue responsibility.
  • Deep understanding of building codes, zoning ordinances, and permit processes-particularly NYC DOB experience preferred.
  • Strong client management, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify and execute on growth opportunities.
