General Summary: The Director of Athletics provides vision, leadership, organization, and oversight for the District's middle school and high school interscholastic athletic programs and serves in an advisory and coordinating capacity with District-affiliated youth sports programs.
The Director of Athletics is responsible for planning, implementing, managing, supervising, evaluating, and continuously improving the District's athletic programs. The position works collaboratively with students, parents/guardians, coaches, teachers, building administrators, District administration, the Carrollton Athletic Association (CAA), the Tri-Valley Conference (TVC), the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA), and other community and athletic organizations.
The successful candidate will be creative, energetic, organized, collaborative, and committed to developing a high-quality, student-centered athletic program that promotes academic achievement, sportsmanship, character development, health and safety, teamwork, and school/community pride.
The Director of Athletics shall ensure that the District's athletic programs operate in accordance with Board policies, District procedures, MHSAA regulations, conference/league requirements, and applicable state and federal laws.
Reports To: High School Principal and Superintendent
Compensation: $55,000. 00 - $60,000.00 based on experience
Essential Job Responsibilities
Athletic Program Administration
  • Provide leadership and direction for the District's middle and high school athletic programs.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate athletic programs in collaboration with administrators, coaches, students, families, and community partners.
  • Serve as the District's primary contact for MHSAA and TVC matters and ensure compliance with MHSAA, conference, Board, District, and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Attend required athletic, conference, and professional development meetings.

Coaches and Staff
  • Recruit, recommend, supervise, support, and evaluate athletic coaches.
  • Ensure coaches complete all required MHSAA training, certifications, rules meetings, and professional development.
  • Address coaching and program concerns in collaboration with District administration.

Scheduling and Events
  • Schedule athletic contests, officials, transportation, facilities, and necessary contest personnel.
  • Prepare and supervise home athletic events and serve as host for visiting schools and officials.
  • Maintain appropriate procedures for event safety, weather-related issues, cancellations, and emergencies.

Student Eligibility and Records
  • Verify and maintain student-athlete eligibility, participation, physical, and related records.
  • Ensure compliance with MHSAA eligibility, transfer, concussion, return-to-play, and other applicable requirements.
  • Communicate eligibility requirements with students, families, coaches, and school administration.

Facilities and Equipment
  • Oversee the safety, maintenance, and improvement of athletic facilities.
  • Coordinate facility use and preparation for practices, contests, and tournaments.
  • Purchase, maintain, and inventory athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies.

Budget and Financial Management
  • Develop and manage the athletic department budget.
  • Monitor athletic expenditures, fundraising, purchasing, and athletic funds in accordance with District procedures.

Community and Student-Athlete Development
  • Serve as the District liaison to the Carrollton Athletic Association, athletic boosters, and youth sports organizations.
  • Promote student-athlete development through opportunities involving academics, leadership, sportsmanship, nutrition, fitness, college recruiting, and character development.
  • Coordinate student-athlete college signing events and recognition programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Demonstrated varsity-level high school coaching experience and knowledge of interscholastic athletics.
  • Knowledge of Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules, regulations, eligibility requirements, and athletic administration practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage middle school and high school athletic programs, including scheduling, events, facilities, personnel, and student eligibility.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents/guardians, coaches, administrators, staff, officials, community members, and outside organizations.
  • Commitment to student development, education-based athletics, sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive school/community relationships.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage athletic budgets, funds, equipment, and other resources.
  • Proficiency with technology and athletic management systems necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain appropriate athletic administration professional development and/or certification, including RAA, CAA, or CMAA through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), as determined by the District.
  • Willingness and ability to attend required meetings, professional development, athletic contests, and events, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must satisfactorily complete all required District employment screening, including the 4205-F Authorization for Release of Information and Employee History Check under 1996 P.A. 189; MCL 380.1230b, as applicable.
  • Must successfully complete required background checks, fingerprinting, and personal and professional reference checks.
  • Must possess or be willing to complete required training in Restorative Justice Practices, CPI, Adult/Infant CPR, and First Aid.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience serving as an Athletic Director or Assistant Athletic Director.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Education, Educational Leadership, Recreation, Physical Education, Athletic Administration, Sports Management, or a related field.
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Previous teaching experience or experience working in a K 12 school setting.
  • Experience working with MHSAA member schools and/or athletic conferences.
  • Experience developing and managing an athletic department budget.
  • Experience recruiting, supervising, and evaluating athletic coaches.
  • MIAAA membership and/or completion of NIAAA Leadership Training Courses.
  • RAA, CAA, CMAA, or other recognized athletic administration credential.
  • The position requires regular work outside of the traditional school day, including evenings, weekends, athletic contests, tournaments, meetings, and other District activities.
  • The position requires frequent movement between athletic facilities and school buildings and may require working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • The position may require occasional lifting, carrying, bending, standing, walking, and other physical activities associated with athletic events and facilities.
