Job description

Description

Westwood Professional Services

The Electrical Intern will join a renewable energy electrical design team, applying relevant coursework and experience to the design of collection systems, interconnection facilities, and balance-of-plant electrical infrastructure for wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Projects range from small feasibility studies to large, complex utility-scale designs for renewable energy developers, IPPs, and utility clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply electrical engineering knowledge to real-world renewable energy infrastructure.

As an Electrical Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards, including IEEE, NESC, and NEC, in the engineering design process and will assist Senior Engineers in the preparation of one-line diagrams, collection system layouts, equipment specifications, and interconnection studies.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with engineers to obtain training and build foundational proficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, SKM/ETAP, and other design software used by Electrical Engineers.
  • Assist in the preparation of electrical one-line diagrams, collection system layouts, and grounding plans for solar, wind, and BESS projects.
  • Support the development of equipment specifications, bills of materials, and construction documents for interconnection and balance-of-plant facilities.
  • Help perform basic load flow, short circuit, and cable sizing calculations under the guidance of Senior Engineers.
  • Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across renewable energy projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
  • Apply applicable engineering standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC, and others) under the guidance of licensed Senior Engineers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferably in Electrical Engineering.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in electrical, power systems, or renewable energy engineering.
  • Experience with technical design software including AutoCAD, PVsyst, SKM/ETAP, or other relevant engineering tools.

Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
