Job description

Foundation Overview:
The HealthWell Foundation is a Forbes 100-rated, Maryland-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to underinsured Americans to help them afford life-changing medical treatments. Our mission is to reduce financial barriers to care for underinsured patients living with chronic or life-altering diseases.
The purpose of this position is to positively contribute to HealthWell's efforts to carry out its mission. Specifically, persons in this position carry out the implementation and day-to-day management of the operations of the accounting department and provides technical support to the CFO in the areas of budgeting, financial analysis and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all applicable laws and regulations.
Persons in this position are expected to be in-office at least three days per week (hybrid) in accordance with the Foundation's policy.
Key Responsibilities -
Accounting & Financial Operations
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and reconciliations.
  • Manage the monthly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare and review financial statements and management reports.
  • Maintain accurate and complete accounting records in accordance with GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting requirements.
  • Monitor internal controls and recommend improvements to accounting processes and procedures.
  • Manage grants accounting processes, including tracking grant funds, ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
  • Works with Operations staff to manage and release incoming donations and ensure appropriate fees are held for program funds.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and support the annual financial statement audit and Form 990 process.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting, tax, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and other accounting activities.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis
  • Assist the CFO with the annual operating budget and long-term financial planning.
  • Work with department leaders to develop and monitor departmental budgets.
  • Prepare monthly budget-to-actual reports and investigate significant variances.
  • Analyze financial trends, operating results, expenses, and other key financial indicators.

Board & Management Reporting
  • Prepare clear and accurate financial reports and presentations for senior leadership.
  • Develop charts, graphs, dashboards, and other visual presentations to communicate financial results effectively.
  • Assist the CFO in preparing materials for Finance Committee and Board meetings.

Other
  • Supervise, develop, and support accounting staff as applicable.
  • Other duties as needed or required.
