They help clients with personal care, medication management, transportation, and skill development to promote independence and well-being. These staff members play a crucial role in supporting individuals to achieve their personal goals and lead fulfilling lives. They often work in group homes, residential facilities, or clients’ own homes, providing both emotional and practical support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a direct support staff member, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Direct Support Staff Member, you need a high school diploma or equivalent, basic caregiving skills, and knowledge of safety protocols when assisting individuals with disabilities or special needs. Direct Support Staff – Transitional Living Home (Edenton, NC)
Salary: $31,200+ (Based on education & experience)

Are you ready to step up, make an impact, and be a role model for youth who need guidance? Methodist Home for Children is looking for strong, dedicated individuals to join our team as Direct Support Staff in our transitional living facility in Edenton, NC. If you’re passionate about helping young people turn their lives around, this is your chance to be part of something bigger.

FIRST THINGS FIRST... WHAT IS A TRANSITIONAL LIVING FACILITY?

For teens on probation who can’t safely return home from a youth development center or other residential placement, these group homes offer 6 to 12 months of real preparation for adult life. Young people here finish school, explore career paths, get jobs, earn driver’s licenses, and learn the practical skills that independence requires: budgeting, cooking, managing bills. We don’t just prepare them to leave; we prepare them to thrive.

  • Implement MHC’s structured model of care to change attitudes and behaviors.

  • Lead by example, teaching respect, responsibility, and resilience.

  • Maintain a safe and positive living environment.

  • Work closely with youth, families, and community partners to create long-term success plans.

  • Support daily activities, from schoolwork to life skills training.

  • Must be 21 years old or older.

  • High school diploma required; experience working with youth (ages 11-17) preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

  • Ability to live onsite while on shift (3 days/nights in a row), including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

BENEFITS – WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED!
  • Paid Holidays & Time Off:

    • 10 vacation days per year (prorated for first year).

    • 12 sick days per year (rolls over annually).

    • Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HSA).

  • Financial & Retirement Benefits:

    • 403B retirement plan with employer match.
