Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS)
Responsibilities
The Center for Advanced Power Systems, established in 2000, is an internationally recognized research and education center specializing in the development, simulation, and testing of advanced concepts in superconducting and conventional electric power systems, as well as materials applications. The Center's mission is to develop and implement systems-driven research and education programs focused on technology issues in electric power systems, modeling and simulation, advanced controls, advanced component development, and testing. All of these are accomplished in collaboration with key stakeholders to meet the needs of governmental agencies and the nation's electric utilities.
The Director serves as the executive officer and is responsible for the overall leadership and maintaining a high level of externally funded research and development activities of the Center. Duties of the Director include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Ensure the Center maintains, builds, and strengthens its reputation as a national and international Power and Energy Center of Excellence, demonstrating leadership in both research and innovation.
  • Update, execute, and continuously monitor the Center's Performance Plan, which supports the Strategic Plans of FSU and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
  • Foster and grow an environment of teamwork, collaboration, and scholarly inquiry, supporting innovative research and the pursuit of new ideas across the Center's disciplines.
  • Articulate the Center's mission and promote CAPS' programs and capabilities to government, industry, and academia, nationally and internationally.
  • Cultivate and expand strategic partnerships with industry to accelerate technology transfer, joint research initiatives, and workforce development opportunities.
  • Ensure that the educational missions of FSU reflected in the outcomes of the Center.
  • Broaden the Center's research and funding portfolio.
  • Play a critical role in hiring the Center's research and tenure-line faculty.
  • Interface with the FSU Sponsored Research Administration and FSU Research Foundation on research proposals and the pre- and post-award processes.

Qualifications
A terminal degree from an accredited institution in a related field, such as an Engineering or Physical Science discipline.
The candidate must be a U.S. citizen and hold a Department of Defense security clearance at a minimum Secret level.
Candidates should have demonstrated intellectual leadership, management skills, and a strong track record of securing government funds or corporate sponsorship for large research programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in grant writing and proposal development, as well as serving as a Principal Investigator on federally funded contracts and grants.
Demonstrated experience in leading research program development.

The Center is located in Tallahassee/Leon County's Innovation Park, home to more than 35 cutting-edge research and manufacturing organizations, including the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University - Florida State University College of Engineering, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the Applied Superconductivity Center, the High-Performance Materials Institute, the Florida Center for Advanced Aero-propulsion, and the FSU Aero-propulsion, Mechatronics and Energy Center.
