How much do direct entry pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for direct entry pilot in the United States is $130,916.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,000.00 and $155,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Direct Entry Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Direct Entry Pilot, you need a commercial pilot license (CPL) or airline transport pilot license (ATPL), substantial flight hours, and comprehensive knowledge of aviation regulations. Familiarity with advanced avionics, flight management systems, and aircraft-specific certifications are typically required. Excellent decision-making, situational awareness, and clear communication skills help pilots manage complex situations and work effectively with crew and ground staff. These competencies ensure safe, efficient flight operations and are critical for making quick, sound judgments under pressure.

What are some common challenges Direct Entry Pilots face when joining a new airline, and how can they prepare for a smooth transition?

Direct Entry Pilots often face challenges such as adapting to new operating procedures, company-specific protocols, and integrating into an established flight crew culture. A smooth transition can be achieved by thoroughly reviewing the airline's manuals, participating actively in company training programs, and seeking mentorship from experienced captains and first officers. Building strong communication with crew members and being proactive in clarifying any uncertainties can also help in quickly becoming an effective part of the team.

What is a Direct Entry Pilot?

A Direct Entry Pilot (DEP) is an experienced pilot who is hired directly into an airline or aviation company, usually bypassing the initial entry-level or cadet pilot positions. DEPs typically have previous flying experience, often with commercial or military backgrounds, and meet specific flight hour and licensing requirements set by the employer. This allows them to join an airline at a higher position, such as First Officer or Captain, depending on their qualifications. Airlines use direct entry recruitment to fill critical vacancies quickly with skilled professionals. The process and requirements may vary depending on the airline and the country.

Job description

Strategies to Empower People is hiring a weekend staff for our Technology Pilot Program!
Our agency provides support services to adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and thanks to our new Technology Pilot Program we are implementing assistive technology and remote monitoring to help our clients get the support they need while minimizing in-person staffing. This program will help our clients reach a new level of independence!
This is a pilot program -- its continued success depends on finding qualified and compassionate staff to support the disabled adults we serve!
WHAT IS THE JOB?
The Technology Pilot Program staff, or Technology Comprehensive Support Professional, provides support to the disabled adults we serve via audio/video monitoring and remote access. The Technology Pilot Program staff monitors multiple alerting systems in real-time to assess needs, respond to safety concerns, and provide remote training & assistance for the people we support. This position is also responsible for documenting all activity & alerts so consistency and accuracy are very important!
The Technology Pilot Program Staff is also responsible for assessing the need for emergency response, communicating with emergency services as needed, and communicating and dispatching field personnel when the need arises.
SCHEDULE
We are hiring for a weekend schedule:
  • Saturday 9a-9p + Sunday 9a-9p (24-hour schedule with 8 hours of overtime built into it)

The rate of pay for this position ranges from $24-$25 per hour.
LOCATION
This position operates out of our Roseville office, located at 730 Sunrise Ave STE 200.
This position can require fieldwork as well, including visits to client homes for assessment/installation purposes as well as off-site training.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for this position must have more than basic experience with technology systems - this includes hardware/software installation and troubleshooting, remote access systems, audio and video setup and monitoring, and database access & entry. Prior experience in the IT field or computer field/home installation field is a plus!
This position isn't just interacting with technology, it's also working with the people we support. This position requires a minimum of 2 years of direct support experience with the I/DD community, complex medical/behavioral needs, or persistent mental health needs. Experience in dispatch, observation and reporting, and crisis triage will also be considered.
Maintaining this position is contingent upon the successful completion of a required 8-hour technology training course. At the completion of the course the Technology Pilot Program Staff will be required to test and pass an examination. If the Technology Pilot Program Staff fails to pass the examination they will not be able to remain in their position.
This position also requires driving, so having a current driver license, auto insurance, reliable vehicle, and clean driving record (no DUIs in past 10 years, no excessive points, etc.) is required as well.
American Sign Language skills are also a big plus!
