The Malta House Nursery provides daycare for the babies of our resident mothers Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Director of Nursery/Head Teacher is responsible for the day-to-day operations and administration of the nursery. This includes scheduling and supervising nursery assistants, planning and implementing the education program for the Nursery, as well as providing care to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of the babies who attend the Nursery program. The Director must ensure that the babies and toddlers in the program are cared for in a safe, clean environment in which to play and learn.
The person in this position is responsible for ensuring adequate coverage in the classroom at all times (based on staff-to-child ratio and group size). Additional responsibilities include:
- Supervise staff in educating parents on best practices and recommendations for proper safety and care.
- Supervise staff in maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and traumainformed learning environment.
- Ensure implementation of a daily structured schedule, focused on ageappropriate learning and discovery.
- Maintain complete files and documentation as required.
- Attend necessary professional development trainings and staff meetings, and enable staff to do the same.
- Maintain confidentiality for all persons served.
- Complete other duties as needed.
The Director/Head Teacher must be able to effectively communicate across a range of populations, including with Nursery staff members, Malta House executive staff, and the parents of the babies in the Nursery program. The person in the position must be able to complete reports, using technology to efficiently complete administration tasks; and must be able to conduct presentations for and otherwise communicate effectively with the mothers whose children are cared for in the nursery.
REQUIREMENTSEducation: A high school diploma or equivalency certificate is required, with preference for candidates who have a degree in Early Childhood Education Program Administration or Educational Administration. Candidates who have not yet completed their degree must acquire a certain number of credits in early childhood education program administration from an accredited institution of higher education within one (1) year of being hired.
The person in this role must meet the qualifications for State of Connecticut approval as a Head Teacher.
This person must have a minimum of 2 years experience supervising staff and the ability to read, write and understand English. Being bilingual in Spanish and/or French Creole is preferred. Excellent communication, organizational and administrative skills with moderate-to-strong computer knowledge are needed.
Physical requirements of this position include the ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance, walk (including up and down stairs), stand sit, run and play on the floor, and the ability to stretch/reach, stoop frequently (bending at the waist) and have hand and finger dexterity.
