Dining Room Assistant information

What is a dining room assistant?

Dining room assistants are staff members who help ensure the smooth operation of dining areas in settings like restaurants, hotels, care homes, or schools. Their responsibilities typically include setting tables, serving food and drinks, clearing tables, and assisting with cleaning duties. They work closely with servers, kitchen staff, and guests to provide a pleasant dining experience. Good communication, organization, and customer service skills are important for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dining room assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dining Room Assistant, you need basic food service knowledge, attention to cleanliness, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, basic food safety certifications, and knowledge of proper sanitation procedures are commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a friendly demeanor are valuable soft skills for interacting with guests and supporting colleagues. These skills ensure a positive dining experience, efficient service, and a safe, welcoming environment for both guests and staff.

What are some common challenges faced by dining room assistants, and how can they be addressed?

Dining Room Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing high volumes of guests during peak meal times and ensuring timely service while maintaining cleanliness. Effective communication with kitchen staff and other team members is crucial for smooth operations. Staying organized, prioritizing tasks, and remaining calm under pressure can help address these challenges. Many employers also provide on-the-job training and encourage teamwork to support new assistants as they acclimate to the fast-paced environment.

Job Description

In-room dining is not a convenience, it is a curated, elevated extension of our culinary experience. Leading it requires intention, discretion, and an intuitive understanding of how guests want to feel in their private space.

As In-Room Dining Manager, you’ll oversee an operation that blends restaurant-level food and beverage with quiet precision, emotional intelligence, and impeccable timing. You’ll shape In-Room Dining as a calm, seamless, and indulgent experience, from order taking to delivery, ensuring every interaction feels thoughtful, unrushed, and deeply considered.

Start Date: August 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
What You'll Be Doing:

Operational Excellence

  • Lead the day-to-day operation of In-Room Dining, ensuring exceptional quality, consistency, and service standards.
  • Oversee daily order flow, timing, and delivery to ensure precise, quiet, and seamless service.
  • Maintain service standards that prioritize discretion, privacy, and emotional awareness.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, liquor legislation, health regulations and brand standards
  • Partner with Culinary to design menus and offerings that travel well, hold quality, and feel complete in-room.
  • Oversee amenity, VIP and special occasion programs, ensuring thoughtful execution and exceptional presentation.

  • Manage mini-market / honour-style self-serve concepts on guest floors.
  • Respond confidently and professionally to guest feedback, resolving concerns with empathy and urgency.
  • Partner closely with Culinary, Stewarding, Front Office, Housekeeping and Guest Services to deliver flawless guest experiences.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Inspire, coach and develop a high-performing team through ongoing training, feedback and recognition.
  • Foster a culture of calm professionalism, pride, and accountability.
  • Lead by example, setting the tone for service pacing, communication, and guest care.
  • Manage scheduling, labour productivity and payroll in alignment with business volumes.
Qualifications

What You Bring

• Leadership experience in luxury hospitality, in-room dining, room service, or fine dining operations.

• Alberta ProServe certification required

Bonus If You Bring

• Experience with Forbes, LQA, or similar luxury service standards.
• A background in wellness-focused or lifestyle hospitality environments.
• Creative experience with curated amenities, VIP experiences, or personalized guest moments.
• A desire to redefine in-room dining as a modern, elevated experience.

Who You Are

You’re composed, intuitive, and guest-obsessed. You understand that luxury often lives in restraint, timing, and tone. You lead with presence rather than volume, and you’re deeply attuned to how service makes people feel. You thrive in environments that require discretion, adaptability, and emotional intelligence, and you take pride in delivering excellence quietly, consistently, and with care.

Lead with intention. Serve with discretion. Stay moved.
