What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in dimensional metrology, and why are they important?

To thrive in Dimensional Metrology, you need a strong background in precision measurement techniques, mathematics, and quality control, often supported by a degree or certificate in engineering, manufacturing technology, or a related field. Familiarity with coordinate measuring machines (CMM), laser scanners, calipers, micrometers, and relevant software like CAD and GD&T is essential, and certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Inspector can be advantageous. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help professionals work accurately and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. These skills are vital to ensure manufactured parts meet strict specifications and industry standards, directly impacting product quality and safety.

What is dimensional metrology?

A Dimensional Metrology job involves the precise measurement and verification of physical components to ensure they meet required specifications and tolerances. Professionals in this role use specialized tools such as calipers, micrometers, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and optical measurement systems. They work in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive to maintain quality control and compliance with engineering standards. This role requires a strong understanding of measurement principles, quality assurance procedures, and technical drawings.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in dimensional metrology?

Professionals in Dimensional Metrology are responsible for inspecting and measuring parts or components to precise tolerances using specialized equipment such as CMMs, lasers, and gauges. Their day-to-day tasks often include setting up measurement devices, analyzing measurement data, documenting inspection results, and communicating findings to engineering or production teams. They may also participate in troubleshooting quality issues and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. Job description

About the Role

As our Senior Engineer, Dimensional Engineering and Metrology, you are the architect of Peloton's global measurement standards. You will lead a world-class metrology lab and serve as the global Subject Matter Expert (SME) for GD&T, ensuring that our design intent translates perfectly into manufacturing reality. This is a high-visibility role where you will bridge Hardware Engineering and Quality, driving long-term product quality and reliability through advanced statistical analysis and a "zero-error" philosophy.

Your Daily Impact
  • Strategic Lab Leadership: Own the Metrology Lab roadmap, including CapEx planning, managing operational infrastructure, and optimizing global measurement processes.
  • Technical Authority & GD&T Mastery: Define corporate standards for GD&T (ISO/ASME). You'll lead cross-functional reviews to transition the team from basic dimensioning to data-driven functional gauging and advanced 1D/2D/3D tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Global Quality Ecosystem: Establish measurement correlation protocols and conduct technical audits with overseas partners (JDM/CM), specifically in Asia, to ensure lab-to-factory data alignment and GRS&R capability.
  • Precision Engineering & Root Cause: Oversee high-precision inspections (CNC-CMM, 3D scanning) and lead dimensional root-cause investigations on prototypes to resolve field failures and improve NPI success.
  • Cross-Functional Innovation: Partner with Supplier Quality and Hardware teams to integrate Design for Inspection (DFI) principles, validating functional gauges and fixtures before tooling kick-off.
  • Talent Cultivation: Act as a mentor and educator, developing technical training programs to elevate metrology literacy and GD&T expertise across the global organization.
You Bring To Peloton
  • Expertise: 10+ years in Dimensional Engineering/Metrology with 3+ years in a technical lead role.
  • Education & Certification: BS in Mechanical Engineering (MS preferred). GD&T certification (ISO1101 or ASME Y14.5) and Six Sigma Black Belt are significant pluses.
  • Technical Toolkit: Expert-level proficiency in PolyWorks, Zeiss Calypso, or PC-DMIS, alongside deep experience in SolidWorks and PTC Windchill.
  • Manufacturing Acumen: Proven success managing "Design for Excellence" (DFX/DFI) and working closely with high-volume manufacturing partners in Asia.
  • Analytical Precision: A strong grasp of MSA and GR&R studies, with the ability to translate complex dimensional data into actionable insights for executive stakeholders.
  • Global Communication: (Nice To Have) Professional proficiency in Mandarin to facilitate seamless collaboration with our international manufacturing partners
