Digital System Design Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Digital System Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital System Design Engineer, you need a strong background in digital electronics, logic design, and hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, typically supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools like Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus, or ModelSim, along with knowledge of FPGA and ASIC design flows, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensuring reliable, efficient, and innovative digital systems that meet complex project requirements.

What are some common challenges Digital System Design Engineers face when working on large-scale projects?

Digital System Design Engineers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex system requirements, ensuring interoperability between various hardware and software components, and meeting strict deadlines. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—such as software developers, hardware engineers, and verification specialists—is crucial for resolving integration issues and maintaining project alignment. Staying up-to-date with evolving technology standards and tools also plays a significant role in overcoming these challenges and delivering robust digital systems.

What are Digital System Design Engineers?

Digital System Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test digital circuits and systems, such as microprocessors, embedded systems, and digital communication devices. They use hardware description languages (HDLs) like VHDL or Verilog to create and simulate digital logic. Their work often involves collaborating with software engineers and hardware teams to ensure that digital systems function efficiently and reliably. These engineers play a crucial role in industries like electronics, telecommunications, and computing.

What is the difference between Digital System Design Engineer vs Digital Hardware Engineer?

Job description

AVL System Design Engineer

Churchfront LLC | Melbourne, Florida

At Churchfront, we believe technology—when paired with timeless truths—can unlock new potential in ministry. We're a national AVL integrator serving churches across the United States, designing and installing clear, reliable, and distraction-free systems that help churches steward technology wisely and maximize their kingdom impact.

We're looking for an AVL System Design Engineer to join our design and engineering team. This role is for someone who thrives in the details—translating big-picture concepts into precise, buildable documentation that sets our install crews up for success.

About the Role

The AVL System Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the full design lifecycle of Churchfront's AVL projects—from concept design through schematics, cable schedules, and final documentation packages handed over to our installation crews and clients.

This role reports to the Director of Design and Engineering and collaborates closely with our consulting and projects teams throughout the design lifecycle.

This is a detail-driven, technical role. You'll spend most of your time in Vectorworks, producing system drawings, signal flow diagrams, cable schedules, and construction documents that reflect AVIXA standards and Churchfront's commitment to quality. You'll work closely with our Director of Projects and senior design staff to bring program report recommendations to life as fully engineered, install-ready packages.

We don't just design systems—we design confidence. When our install crew opens a drawing set on-site, there should be zero ambiguity. When a church receives their documentation package, it should reflect the same standard of excellence we bring to every project.

What You'll Be Doing

Concept Design & Development Take program report recommendations and begin translating them into preliminary system layouts, equipment placement plans, and signal flow concepts. Collaborate with the design team to refine scope, identify constraints, and align system architecture with the church's ministry goals.

Schematic Design & Engineering Documentation Produce detailed system schematics, block diagrams, signal flow drawings, and rack elevations in Vectorworks. Develop cable schedules, connector specifications, and labeling conventions that leave no room for interpretation on the job site.

Construction Documentation Create install-ready drawing sets that include equipment locations, conduit routing, cable pathways, power requirements, and mounting details. Ensure all documentation is organized, version-controlled, and consistent across the project.

Coordination & Handoff Coordinate with project leadership to ensure designs align with budgets, timelines, and site conditions. Prepare documentation packages for install crews that are clear, complete, and actionable. Support client-facing handoff documentation as needed.

Standards & Quality Maintain Churchfront's design standards and drawing templates. Flag design conflicts, constructability issues, or specification gaps before they become problems on-site. Stay current with AVIXA standards and industry best practices for AVL system design.

What We're Looking For
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks (required—this is your primary tool)
  • Strong understanding of audio, video, and lighting system design for houses of worship or similar venues
  • Experience producing schematics, cable schedules, signal flow diagrams, and construction documents
  • Familiarity with AVIXA standards and pre-design/design workflows
  • Comfort reading and producing reflected ceiling plans, equipment layouts, and rack elevations
  • Electrical engineering background is a plus but not required
  • CTS or CTS-D certification is a plus
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality
You'll Thrive Here If You...
  • Act like an owner—you take full responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of your work
  • Lead with humility—you're eager to learn, unafraid to ask questions, and open to feedback
  • Leave no room for ambiguity—your drawings speak for themselves
  • Think ahead—you anticipate install challenges before they show up on the job site
  • Value results over excuses—when something isn't right, you fix it
  • Care about the mission—you understand that every drawing you produce ultimately serves the local church

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, audio engineering, or a related technical field—or equivalent hands-on experience in AVL system design
  • Background in architectural or engineering drafting, particularly in Vectorworks or CAD environments
  • Experience in commercial AV integration, systems engineering, or low voltage design for houses of worship, performing arts, or similar venue types
  • Exposure to construction documentation workflows—understanding how drawings move from design intent to field execution
  • AVIXA CTS, CTS-D, or CTS-I certification
  • Familiarity with NEC code requirements, low voltage standards, or electrical engineering principles as they relate to AVL infrastructure

Benefits

  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Training & Development
