Scope: Proactive Senior Systems Engineer to design, develop, integrate, maintain, and document complex metabolic measurement systems in collaboration with multidisciplinary engineers and researchers. This role is responsible for defining system requirements, developing system architectures, evaluating prototypes, and advancing innovative technologies from concept through commercialization.


Management Scope: None


Responsibilities:
  • Conduct engineering risk assessments, including Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis.
  • Develop and define system requirements, architecture, and specifications.
  • Develop and present Preliminary Design Review (PDR) documentation aligned with product requirements and business objectives.
  • Coordinate cross-functional engineering activities to ensure seamless subsystem integration.
  • Configure, install, and test hardware, firmware, software, and network infrastructure.
  • Develop validation protocols, verification procedures, and quality-control processes.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and troubleshooting of system issues and service interruptions.
  • Develop physical and mathematical models for gas sampling systems, moisture-removal systems, and mixing chambers.
  • Construct physical and simulated prototypes to evaluate new technologies and concepts.
  • Develop and validate algorithms for RMR, RER, VO2, and VCO2 calculations.
  • Design and implement automated calibration routines for ambient air and reference gases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Strong knowledge of Oโ‚‚ and COโ‚‚ sensing technologies and flow measurement systems.
  • Proficiency in fluid dynamics and pneumatics.
  • Proficiency in signal processing and digital signal processing (DSP).
  • Experience with embedded systems and programming using MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or LabVIEW.
  • Experience with metabolic physiology, gas exchange dynamics, and breath-by-breath analysis.
  • Experience across the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Understanding of indirect calorimetry, Weir Equation, Haldane Transformation, Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER), and VO2/VCO2 calculations.
  • Experience with MPLABX, Atmel Studio, Visual Studio Code, and Arduino IDE.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and PCB layouts.
  • Technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and TeamsDesired
  • Experience with regulatory and third-party approval processes (ISO, UL, CE, etc.).
  • Experience with iOS and/or Android application development.

Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Three to five years of related Systems Engineering experience.
