What is a digital IC design?

A Digital IC Design job involves designing, implementing, and verifying digital integrated circuits (ICs) used in electronic devices. Engineers in this role work with hardware description languages (HDLs) like Verilog or VHDL to create and simulate digital logic circuits. They collaborate with teams on architecture, RTL design, synthesis, and timing analysis to ensure performance and power efficiency. This role is critical in developing chips for applications like processors, memory, networking, and consumer electronics.

What does a digital IC design engineer do?

As a Digital IC Design engineer, your projects usually start with interpreting system specifications and translating them into digital architecture and RTL code. You'll iteratively design, simulate, and verify your circuits using industry-standard EDA tools, often collaborating closely with verification, physical design, and firmware teams to ensure end-to-end functionality. Throughout a project, you'll participate in design reviews, debug complex issues, and optimize performance and power based on real-world constraints. This collaborative and structured workflow is designed to ensure that final chip designs meet all functional, timing, and manufacturability requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in digital IC design?

To thrive as a Digital IC Design engineer, you need a strong background in digital electronics, circuit design, and semiconductor theory, typically supported by a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware description languages such as Verilog or VHDL, experience with EDA tools like Cadence or Synopsys, and understanding of ASIC/FPGA design flows are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills are highly valuable in this role. These competencies are critical to delivering reliable, high-performance integrated circuits within tight project timelines and multidisciplinary environments.

How hard is it to get into digital IC design?

Getting into digital IC design typically requires a strong background in electrical engineering or computer engineering, with knowledge of digital logic, hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, and experience with CAD tools. Entry often involves obtaining a relevant degree and developing skills through internships or projects, as the field is competitive and technical.

Is digital IC design a good career?

Digital IC design is a specialized engineering field focused on creating integrated circuits used in electronic devices. It offers strong job prospects, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work with advanced tools like HDL languages and simulation software. Success in this career typically requires a solid understanding of electronics, logic design, and relevant certifications or degrees.

What do digital IC designers do?

Digital IC designers develop and create integrated circuits used in electronic devices by designing digital logic components, such as processors and memory chips. They use hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog and work with electronic design automation tools to simulate, verify, and optimize circuit performance before manufacturing. Their work often involves collaboration with teams to ensure the circuits meet specifications and industry standards.

Job description

Silanna Semiconductors is actively seeking an experienced Senior Digital Design Engineer to contribute to the design and development of integrated circuit solutions related to Silannaโ€™s innovative mixed-signal technology.

This position requires participation in all aspects of the IC development cycle including RTL architecture and design, SystemVerilog/UVM verification, design integration, synthesis support, timing analysis, FPGA prototyping, and test bench debug and characterization.

Experience with physical implementation flows including synthesis and place-and-route is highly desirable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The team drives architecture, design, implementation, and verifcation of mixed-signal systems that include circuit blocks such as PLLs, DLLs, VCOs, ADCs, DACs, Filters, clock distribution and/or recovery systems.

  • Develop RTL designs in Verilog/SystemVerilog for complex digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits
  • Define and implement verification environments using SystemVerilog and UVM methodologies
  • Create test plans, constrained-random testbenches, assertions, coverage models, and regression suites
  • Collaborate with system engineers to optimize circuit designs and system specification trade-offs
  • Perform block-level and top-level integration and verification
  • Analyze and debug functional, timing, CDC, reset, and integration issues
  • Support synthesis, static timing analysis, lint, CDC, and lowโ€‘power verification flows
  • Assist with topโ€‘level assembly and design tapeout to semiconductor foundry
  • Collaborate with backend engineers on synthesis, floorplanning, timing closure, and placeโ€‘andโ€‘route activities
  • Create SystemVerilog models of the analog blocks
  • Characterize and debug relevant blocks in silicon
  • Perform bench testing and verification from prototype debug through production release
  • Report the results of IC design, analysis, and evaluation
Required Skills and Experience
  • Strong background in RTL design, digital IC architecture, DSP, and functional verification methodologies
