What does a Digital IC Design Engineer do?

A Digital IC Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and verifying digital integrated circuits (ICs) used in electronic devices. They work with hardware description languages (HDLs) like VHDL or Verilog to create digital logic circuits and simulate their functionality. Their tasks include architecture definition, RTL coding, synthesis, timing analysis, and verification to ensure performance and power efficiency. They collaborate with cross-functional teams, including physical design and verification engineers, to bring IC designs from concept to silicon manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Digital IC Design Engineer?

To thrive as a Digital IC Design Engineer, you need a solid background in digital logic design, Verilog or VHDL coding, and an understanding of semiconductor device fundamentals, typically supported by a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with EDA tools (such as Cadence, Synopsys, or Mentor Graphics), simulation environments, and industry standards like IEEE 1800 is highly valued, with relevant certifications being a plus. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork and communication abilities are essential soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing, verifying, and optimizing complex integrated circuits in collaborative, deadline-driven environments.

Job description

As a Digital IC Design Engineer you will be responsible for managing and executing activities associated with the design, integration, verification, and maintenance of digital IP integrated into ICs used in embedded microcontroller-based system solutions. In this role, you will help bring cutting-edge System-on-Chip solutions to the ADAS market. You will work closely with the development team to produce an MCU and Security IP strategy driven by the product roadmap, ensuring the development or acquisition of reusable IP blocks.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support system architecture definition related to security and functional safety, including core logic, memory subsystems, hardware security systems, peripheral interfaces, and power management.

  • Drive and/or support the implementation of innovative security features for large, complex designs across multiple platforms, with reuse and long-term scalability in mind.

  • Support the definition of security lifecycle management and assess potential vulnerabilities in ASIC design and the supply chain to prevent breaches of trust.

  • Scope and benchmark IP offerings from third-party vendors (microcontroller cores and peripherals).

  • Support development plan creation and associated deliverables (firmware, test plans, test code, validation boards, etc.).

  • Actively participate in the integration, pre-silicon verification, and validation of microcontroller subsystems.

  • Support product and test engineering teams to test and productize designs, including Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).

  • Provide support and develop firmware reference code for verification and validation stages.

  • Bridge hardware and software architecture with a focus on reusable toolchains and platform content.

Job Requirements

At indie, you must enjoy being part of an organization where everyone makes a difference and contributes to the company's success. Creativity, ownership, and excellence are core to our culture. The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experience. We understand nobody is perfect; your new role should challenge you and provide opportunities to grow.

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering

  • 5+ years of relevant Digital IC Design experience

  • Experience developing system-level architecture and proposing RTL (Verilog) implementations with supporting documentation

  • Strong knowledge of Arm Cortex-based products

  • Knowledge of security concepts (key storage, secure elements, AES, product lifecycles)

  • Demonstrated experience with digital circuit simulation tools and front-end environments, particularly Cadence-based

  • Familiarity with version control systems, release management, continuous integration, and unit testing

  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) for design automation

  • Outstanding communication skills (English)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of ISO 26262 functional safety framework (FTA, FMEDA, FMEA) and tools such as JAMA and Medini

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity standards, including ISO 21434
