What is the difference between Digital Fabrication Internship vs Digital Fabrication Technician?

AspectDigital Fabrication InternshipDigital Fabrication Technician
CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of relevant programTechnical certifications or experience often required
Work EnvironmentEducational or project-based settings, labsManufacturing facilities, workshops, labs
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with projects, learning fabrication processesOperating equipment, maintaining tools, executing fabrication tasks
Industry UsageInternship programs in design, architecture, engineeringFull-time roles in manufacturing, prototyping, fabrication shops

The Digital Fabrication Internship is typically a learning position for students or recent graduates gaining hands-on experience, while the Digital Fabrication Technician is a skilled role focused on executing fabrication tasks in professional settings. Internships often serve as entry points, whereas technicians are more experienced professionals in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital fabrication intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Fabrication Intern, you need a foundational understanding of design principles, 3D modeling, and fabrication processes, often gained through coursework in engineering, architecture, or industrial design. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or Rhino), digital fabrication tools like 3D printers and laser cutters, and basic programming or electronics is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns excel in collaborative, project-driven environments. These skills are essential for turning digital concepts into physical prototypes efficiently and accurately while working within diverse teams.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with during a digital fabrication internship?

During a Digital Fabrication Internship, you will typically work on hands-on projects involving technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and digital modeling software. Interns often assist in prototyping, testing materials, and supporting production runs for real-world applications. You may collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and other interns, gaining exposure to both the creative and technical aspects of fabrication. This environment is dynamic and encourages learning, making it a great opportunity to develop practical skills and build your professional portfolio.

What is a digital fabrication internship?

A Digital Fabrication Internship is a temporary position that offers students or recent graduates hands-on experience working with digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, and related software. Interns typically assist in designing, prototyping, and producing physical objects using digital tools in a lab or maker space setting. The internship provides valuable skills in digital design, fabrication processes, and project management, preparing participants for careers in engineering, design, architecture, or manufacturing.

About Neuralink:
We are creating devices that enable a bi-directional interface with the brain. These devices allow us to restore movement to the paralyzed, restore sight to the blind, and revolutionize how humans interact with their digital world.
Team Description:
The Machine Shop is a vital component of Neuralink's mission to develop the world's best and most manufacturable Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). Our team of skilled Machinists play a crucial role in accelerating engineering innovation by producing high-precision robot parts, surgical components, executing small batch runs for the Brain Interfaces team, and providing design and fabrication support for Animal Care teams. As a small, collaborative group, we operate with a sense of urgency and prioritize maintaining an excellent work culture.

  • Measure and inspect finished parts using precision tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, coordinate measuring machines), comparing them to blueprints and engineering specifications to maintain high levels of precision and quality throughout production
  • Perform routine maintenance on CNC equipment to ensure optimal performance, identify and address potential issues before they cause machine downtime, and maintain a clean and organized workspace
  • Manage parts in your queue, including material purchasing and proper tooling selection

Required Qualifications:
  • 2 years of relevant machine shop experience
  • Experience with at least one CAM software and one CNC control
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Machine operator experience

Additional Requirements and Competencies:
