What are Digital Accessibility Engineers?

Digital Accessibility Engineers are professionals who ensure that websites, applications, and digital content are usable by people with disabilities. They apply guidelines such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to evaluate, design, and remediate digital products for accessibility. Their work involves coding, testing, and collaborating with designers and developers to remove barriers for users with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments. By ensuring digital accessibility, they help organizations comply with legal standards and create inclusive experiences for all users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Digital Accessibility Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Digital Accessibility Engineer, you need a solid understanding of web development, accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and experience with assistive technologies, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with accessibility testing tools (like Axe, WAVE, or JAWS), HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and certifications such as CPACC or WAS are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication help you advocate for inclusive design and collaborate across teams. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure digital products are usable by everyone, meeting legal requirements and expanding access.
