Job Description
Responsible for communication between Nursing Units, families, patients and the Food Service Department regarding patient ordering, menus, diet changes, and general patient services. Responsible for the accurate and timely meal service to patients. Responsible to provide a high-quality dining experience to the patients which meets their nutritional requirements and service expectations.
Job Duties:
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers, and others.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Lurie Children's mission, value, and philosophy in the performance of duties.
  • Depending on the position assigned performs the following job functions:
  • Answers phones and acts as liaison between Nursing, patients, and the Food Service Department in assisting the patient with menu selections based on their nutritional needs and assists patients in filling out their menus.
  • Utilizes diet office computer system to take, process and interact with patients regarding their diets and menu selections.
  • Works with dietitian as necessary on specific diet requirements
  • Updates diet office computer system as appropriate.
  • Fills stock as appropriate
  • Delivers and picks up patient trays as appropriate according to established standards using pre-determined parameters for patient identification and within designated time frames.
  • Produces reports from computer system as appropriate to position and completes all clerical paperwork as assigned
  • Stocks the patient nourishment kitchen according to established par levels
  • Prepares paper menus for Mental Health unit and Diabetic patients
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and HIPPA regulations in performance of their job.
  • Cleans areas as assigned using proper chemicals and cleaning equipment
  • Uses proper safety techniques in the performance of their duties.
  • Prepares and delivers patient nourishments on a daily basis according to established standards.
  • Practices Standard precautions in the performance of their job routine.
  • Dressed in proper uniform at all times and wearing protective equipment as required.
  • Other duties assigned as relevant and necessary for the smooth operation of the department.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Certification/Licensure/Registration: Minimum High School education of GED equivalent.
  • Current Food Handler Certificate (or within 30 days of hire).
  • General Minimum Level Job Requirements:
  • Good communication skills
  • Customer service skills
  • Clearly speaks and writes English
  • Basic Computer competency
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to rotate positions
  • Ability to push, pull, bend, twist, turn, and reach.
