Job description

Skills:

  • Perform journeyman-level diagnostic repair and maintenance of compressed natural gas (CNG) powered buses, automotive vehicles, or mechanical equipment
  • Service buses, automobiles, trucks, diagnosing trouble and making repairs or adjustments
  • Inspect buses and other transit vehicles to assure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Federal regulations; use diagnostic equipment to evaluate the operation and repair of engines, electrical, automotive systems, and equipment
  • Inspect, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair braking systems, balance and align wheels, rotate tires, etc.
  • Complete major and minor overhaul or rebuild of engines, transmissions, and differentials
  • Check, change, or refill oil, fuel, transmission, brake, and other fluids
  • Coordinate with other maintenance personnel an efficient program for scheduling and performing preventative maintenance of buses and equipment
  • Performs required safety inspections 
  • Operate a variety of precision power and hand-held engine, electrical, or other testing diagnostic equipment and tools used in a repair shop 

  • Keep legible records and make reports related to all repairs
  • Respond to bus breakdowns on the road
  • Maintain the bus garage in a clean, orderly, and safe manner, free from hazardous conditions, in compliance with all health and safety regulations
  • Perform road tests to evaluate malfunctions, needed maintenance, or check on recent repairs
  • Perform other vehicular maintenance as may be required

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment necessary for the repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive and diesel equipment

  • Diesel, gasoline, and alternatively fueled engines and related equipment repair and maintenance procedures

  • Hydraulic and air brake systems, shock absorbers, doors, and other coach equipment

  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC)

  • Occupational hazards of the mechanics trades and applicable health and safety laws, regulations, and practices

  • Operation and use of hand, power tools and equipment used in gasoline or diesel engine repair and maintenance of related parts or equipment, including CNG and high-tech diesel engines

  • Fuels, fluids, and chemicals used in maintenance and operation of buses and other automotive vehicles, including compressed natural gas, gasoline, oil, transmission or brake fluid, battery acid, etc.

  • Proper lifting techniques

  • Standard arithmetic and basic business English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation

  • Inventory methods and practices; proper record keeping techniques 

  • Skill in operating manual and automated office equipment, including a personal computer
  • Spreadsheet and word processing software programs to maintain records and reports
