What does a die attach process engineer do?

A Die Attach Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and overseeing the process of attaching semiconductor dies to substrates or packages during the manufacturing of electronic components. This involves selecting appropriate materials, establishing process parameters, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring high yields and quality. They work closely with design, quality, and production teams to implement efficient and reliable die attach processes, often using techniques like epoxy, eutectic, or solder bonding. Their expertise helps ensure the performance and reliability of semiconductor devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a die attach process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Die Attach Process Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, semiconductor manufacturing, and process engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with die attach equipment, process control systems, and analytical tools like SEM or X-ray inspection is commonly required, along with knowledge of industry standards. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help drive process improvements and cross-functional collaboration. These competencies are essential to ensure high yield, product reliability, and efficient production in semiconductor assembly.

What are some common challenges faced by die attach process engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Die Attach Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining process consistency, managing material compatibility, and minimizing defects like voids or misalignment. Addressing these issues typically involves close monitoring of equipment calibration, frequent process audits, and collaboration with quality assurance teams. Staying updated on the latest material science developments and engaging in cross-functional problem-solving with R&D and production teams also help in optimizing the die attach process and improving yield.

What is the difference between Die Attach Process Engineer vs Die Attach Technician?

AspectDie Attach Process EngineerDie Attach Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Engineering or related field, certifications in process engineeringTechnical diploma or associate degree, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing die attach processes in manufacturingExecuting daily die attach tasks on production lines
ResponsibilitiesProcess development, troubleshooting, process improvementPerforming die attach operations, quality checks

The Die Attach Process Engineer focuses on developing and improving die attach processes, ensuring efficiency and quality, while the Die Attach Technician handles the hands-on execution of die attach tasks on the production floor. Both roles require technical knowledge, but the engineer's role is more analytical and process-oriented, whereas the technician's role is more operational and task-specific.

Job description

PsiQuantum'sย mission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.ย

Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.ย

Our architecture and approachย isย based on silicon photonics. Byย leveragingย the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photonsย don'tย feel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.ย

In 2024,ย PsiQuantumย announced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.ย

PsiQuantumย also develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.ย

Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. Itย representsย a fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot beย solvedย any other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clearย pathย to make it real.ย

Come join us.ย
