Job Description

The Geotechnical Driller is responsible for leading various tasks including maintaining and operating the drilling rigs and equipment at various sites. 

Responsibilities
  • Operate various core drills to bore into surface and subsurface land.
  • Calibrate machine and select drill according to job.
  • Start and stop drilling motion.
  • Position machine, tooling, and support equipment.
  • Operate skid mounted or helicopter supported drilling machines.
  • Measure locations and ensure safe drilling can be achieved.
  • Read instructions and diagrams.
  • Remove samples during mineral exploration or soil testing.
  • Operation and preventative maintenance of drill rigs and support vehicles.
  • Familiar with various drilling techniques
    • Diamond core
    • Air rotary
    • Hollow stem auger
  • Familiar with various sampling techniques
    • Split spoon
    • Rock chip sampling via cyclone
    • Tripple tube core
  • Track and submit shift reports daily
  • Recognize unusual/unexpected ground conditions and alert supervision.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success also may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience transporting drills on tracked carriers.
  • MSHA Certification required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in directly related position required.
  • Ability to work in remote areas under difficult conditions.
  • Ability to take and pass a pre-employment UA drug test required.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold weather and to fumes or airborne particles. May be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must have the stamina to work on 12 hour shifts for extended periods of time.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.

Travel may require an employee or contractor to pass a TSA security checkpoint. If the employee or contractor does not have valid identification, they will not be able to travel until valid identification is obtained and verified.  For this reason all employees and contractors must have valid identification when traveling to and from the mine, for a list of TSA approved valid identification visit https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification .
