Job description
The Department of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) seeks to recruit an accomplished leader to serve as Director of the Ian Burr Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. The successful candidate will be committed to the Department's mission to improve the lives of children through excellence in clinical care, research, and education, and will articulate a compelling strategy for advancing all three missions across a vibrant, multi-site enterprise.
Responsibilities include representing, leading, and advocating for the division's faculty and staff; strategic planning and operational oversight of inpatient and extensive outpatient initiatives; managing both the academic and business aspects of the division; and collaborating with peer leaders to implement, evaluate, and continuously improve the division's clinical, educational, and research programs.
Division Highlights
- Scale and Scope of Care - With 17 physician faculty, 6 advanced practice providers, and 13 clinical, administrative, and research staff, the division maintains a vibrant portfolio of clinical care alongside education, research, and quality improvement. The division is consistently ranked among the best in the United States by US News and World Report. The Children's Diabetes Program at Vanderbilt is among the largest in the United States, caring for more than 3,200 pediatric patients with diabetes in 2025. The division saw approximately 23,000 outpatient visits in 2025 across endocrinology and diabetes. The division functions as a consult service for inpatients with diabetes and other endocrine conditions and supports an active inpatient glucose management service.
- Access and Reach - Endocrinology and diabetes care is provided on campus at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt and across a robust regional network of ambulatory clinics; approximately 50% of visits occur at our network of 8 off-site clinics throughout the central part of Tennessee, reflecting a strong commitment to bringing subspecialty case closer to families across the region.
- Signature Clinical Programs:
- Pre-Type 2 Diabetes Clinic; Turner Syndrome Clinic; Disorders of Sex Development program; Pediatric Lipid Clinic; Prader-Willi (PWS) program; Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic; Rare Genetic Bone Diseases; Pediatric Head and Neck Endocrine Cancer Program; Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes; Adrenoleukodystrophy; Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy endocrine program.
- Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Clinic delivering teplizumab to eligible Stage 2 patients, with established protocols, infusion site workflows, and longitudinal follow up; the division serves as a regional and national leader in disease-modifying therapy and anticipates future growth in this area.
- Research Enterprise - The division sustains a broad, externally funded portfolio (including NIH, foundation, and industry awards) spanning type 1 diabetes prevention/immune modulation (TrialNet Clinical Center), monogenic/syndromic obesity therapeutics, lipid disorders, and rare bone disease. Multiple active and pending grants and clinical trials provide rich opportunities for team science and mentorship of physician scientists and clinician investigators.
- Education and Training - An ACGME-accredited Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship is undergoing curriculum redesign and program revitalization under new leadership, creating an opportunity for the next Division Director to shape trainee experience, wellness, and the scholarly development of the future workforce in pediatric endocrinology.
- Quality Improvement and Informatics - VUMC's Department of Pediatrics offers advanced quality improvement training to fellows and faculty through the longitudinal Quality Academy and Quality Academic Community. Division members lead quality improvement efforts focused on adhering to the highest quality standards in the care of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and other endocrine conditions. The division is home to key informatics leadership, and the informatics team is active in organization-wide initiatives.
The Department of Pediatrics is committed to excellence in research, education, and patient care. The department is home to approximately 500 dedicated faculty members and providers and currently ranks #1 in NIH funding among U.S. medical schools, offering an exceptional work environment with the opportunity to perform superb multi-disciplinary care, education, and research.
