Dexa Scan Techs, also known as DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) Technologists, are healthcare professionals who operate DEXA scanners to measure bone mineral density. They help diagnose conditions like osteoporosis by performing scans and ensuring accurate imaging results. Dexa Scan Techs work in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers, often collaborating with radiologists and other medical staff to provide essential information about a patient's bone health.

Job description

DEXA Technologist
As a DEXA Technologist at BodySpec, you'll spend your shifts doing the work that drew you to health and wellness in the first place. You'll sit one-on-one with people who came into our Bethesda storefront specifically to learn real, measurable things about their bodies, running their DEXA scans and walking them through what the results mean. No memberships to sell, no client book to build, no busywork that doesn't actually help anyone, just preventive health work that makes a real difference, one scan at a time. We're the premier DEXA operator in the country, helping people understand and improve their health through accessible body composition scanning.
First-year full-time DEXA Technologists in Bethesda, MD can expect to earn up to $63,944 in total cash compensation (starting at $24.50/hour, $50,960 annualized at 40 hrs/week), plus equity.
You'll Love This Job If You Have:
  • Warmth With Strangers: You're the person who can put a stranger at ease in two minutes. You're warm, professional, and genuinely curious about the people you meet, and clients walk away from a scan with you remembering the experience as much as the data.
  • Grit Without Ego: You don't think any task is beneath you. You set up the room, restock supplies, clean equipment, and tidy the storefront, then turn around and deliver a polished customer experience for the next client. The mix doesn't faze you.
  • Resourcefulness: When the schedule's packed or something isn't working right, you figure it out and keep the day moving instead of waiting for someone else to solve it.
  • Operational Excellence: Checklists get run. Equipment gets cared for. Paperwork is right the first time. Sloppy work bothers you, and your teammates can trust what you hand off.
  • Real Interest In Preventive Health: You care about what the scan actually tells the client, not just running the machine. You believe health is about more than treating illness, and you want to help people understand their bodies.
What Will You Do?
  • Run DEXA scans for clients in our Bethesda storefront, delivering a polished one-on-one experience for dozens of people each shift.
  • Walk every client through their results, explaining what the scan shows and answering their questions with warmth and clarity.
  • Own the storefront experience from open to close: greeting clients, managing the schedule, and keeping the day running smoothly.
  • Get fully trained and licensed as a DEXA technologist on us. We cover licensing costs and provide best-in-class training.
  • Keep the storefront and equipment clean, maintained, and ready for the next client, including general administrative and upkeep work between scans.
  • Jump into whatever else the Leadership Team needs. Small team, lots of variety.
Requirements
  • Based in Bethesda, MD and able to work in-person at our storefront.
  • Available full-time on a fixed Wednesday-Sunday schedule, which includes both weekend days every week and qualifies for the weekend bonus described below. Shifts are 8 hours, with start times typically ranging between 7:00am and 12:00pm depending on location.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (equipment handling).
  • 0-2 years of customer-facing experience (flexible if you can demonstrate the skills). Backgrounds in personal training, health coaching, fitness, or nutrition (or degrees in kinesiology, exercise science, or related fields) are common but not required.
  • If you've taken standardized tests (SAT, ACT, ASVAB, or similar), please share your scores. Not required and not the sole factor, but it helps us calibrate since we don't run pre-employment testing.
  • Ability to thrive with direct, unfiltered feedback. We'll tell you exactly what you need to improve.
Compensation
First-year full-time DEXA Technologists in Bethesda, MD can expect to earn up to $63,944 in total cash compensation, plus equity.
  • Hourly Rate: $24.50/hour ($50,960 annualized at 40 hrs/week)
  • Performance Bonus: Up to 7% of your annual base ($3,567), paid yearly, half in cash ($1,784) and half in stock options ($1,783)
  • Monthly Bonus: $500/month when we hit our goals, split between personal performance ($250) and company goals ($250), for up to $6,000 a year
  • Weekend Bonus: $100/week for working both Saturday and Sunday, which this schedule qualifies for every week ($5,200 annually)
  • Guaranteed Pay: Guaranteed weekly pay equivalent to 30 hours of work, with the opportunity to earn more by working more
  • Overtime: Eligible for overtime pay on an as-needed basis
  • Total Cash Compensation: Up to $63,944
  • Equity: Stock options through your performance bonus, plus additional grants based on performance
All team members regardless of position are eligible for additional stock option grants and profit sharing based on performance. We expect both cash and equity compensation to grow as the company scales.
Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Sick leave
  • $75/month commute reimbursement
  • $10/shift meal stipend
  • Company-wide peer bonus program for recognizing excellent teamwork
  • Employee assistance program
  • Regular team events (both virtual and in-person)

BodySpec is transforming how people understand and improve their health through accessible DEXA scanning. As a DEXA Technologist in our Bethesda storefront, you'll be the face of that mission for dozens of people every shift. Every scan you run is one more person who walks away with real information about their body. If you want one-on-one work that actually matters, a team that tells you the truth, and a clear shot at growing inside a real company, we want to hear from you.
