What is a dewatering engineer?

Dewatering Engineers are professionals who design and implement systems to remove groundwater or surface water from construction sites, mines, or other areas where water accumulation can hinder operations. They use methods such as pumps, wells, and drainage systems to control water levels, ensuring a safe and stable environment for construction or mining activities. Dewatering Engineers also analyze site conditions, plan dewatering strategies, and monitor the effectiveness of these systems throughout the project. Their expertise helps prevent flooding, soil instability, and other water-related issues that could delay or endanger a project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dewatering engineer?

To thrive as a Dewatering Engineer, you need expertise in hydrogeology, civil engineering principles, and site assessment, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree and field experience. Familiarity with dewatering equipment, groundwater modeling software, and health and safety regulations is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project management skills set top professionals apart. These skills ensure safe, efficient water management on construction or mining sites, preventing delays and ensuring regulatory compliance.

What are some typical challenges faced by dewatering engineers on large construction projects?

Dewatering Engineers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating groundwater levels, unpredictable soil conditions, and the need to maintain environmental compliance while keeping construction sites dry. Coordinating with geotechnical teams and contractors is essential to adapt dewatering systems as site conditions change. Effective communication and ongoing monitoring help ensure that water removal does not compromise site stability or cause delays, making flexibility and problem-solving critical skills in this role.

What is the difference between Dewatering Engineer vs Geotechnical Engineer?

AspectDewatering EngineerGeotechnical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Civil or Environmental Engineering, certifications in dewatering or water managementBachelor's in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, professional engineering license

Industry UsageConstruction, mining, environmental remediationConstruction, infrastructure, environmental consulting
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

While Dewatering Engineers focus on managing water removal to ensure construction and environmental projects proceed safely, Geotechnical Engineers analyze soil stability and foundation conditions. Both roles often collaborate on construction projects but have distinct specializations related to water management versus soil analysis.

Job description

Technical Sales Engineer - Dewatering & Pump Solutions

DEWATERING & PUMP EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This is NOT a general outside sales position.

Candidates MUST have professional experience with DEWATERING SOLUTIONS, PUMPS, and/or FLUID-HANDLING SYSTEMS to be considered for this role.

If your background does not include hands-on technical knowledge of pumps, dewatering applications, bypass pumping, groundwater control, or closely related fluid-handling solutions, you will not meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

The Opportunity

Seeking a Technical Sales Engineer who can combine technical pump and dewatering expertise with a strong ability to develop relationships and win business.

This individual will work directly with contractors, municipalities, industrial customers, engineers, and project stakeholders to understand complex water-management challenges and develop effective equipment and dewatering solutions.

We are looking for someone who can do more than sell equipment. You must be able to understand the application, evaluate the customer's needs, recommend the right solution, and confidently communicate why it will work.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and grow business within an assigned territory through new account development and expansion of existing customer relationships.
  • Identify opportunities involving construction dewatering, groundwater control, bypass pumping, water transfer, and temporary pumping systems.
  • Meet with customers in the field to understand project conditions, technical requirements, schedules, and operational challenges.
  • Recommend appropriate pumps, hoses, piping, fittings, accessories, and supporting equipment based on the application.
  • Work closely with operations and technical teams to develop practical, cost-effective solutions for customer projects.
  • Prepare proposals, pricing, equipment recommendations, and solution presentations.
  • Build relationships with contractors, project managers, estimators, engineers, municipalities, utilities, and industrial customers.
  • Maintain an active pipeline of opportunities and consistently pursue new business throughout the territory.
  • Remain involved throughout the sales and project lifecycle to ensure customer expectations are met.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable technical resource and trusted partner to customers.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE - PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

Dewatering and pump knowledge is MANDATORY.

Qualified candidates should have direct professional experience in one or more of the following:

  • Construction dewatering
  • Groundwater control
  • Temporary pumping systems
  • Bypass pumping
  • Industrial or municipal pumping
  • Water transfer applications
  • Pump rental or pump equipment sales
  • Pump sizing and application
  • Fluid-handling systems
  • Pump accessories, hoses, piping, fittings, valves, and related equipment

General construction sales experience alone will not qualify a candidate for this position.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience selling or supporting pumps, dewatering systems, or technical fluid-handling solutions
  • Strong understanding of pump applications and the ability to discuss equipment requirements confidently with customers
  • Demonstrated success developing new business and building long-term customer relationships
  • Ability to understand jobsite conditions and translate customer challenges into practical equipment solutions
  • Comfortable working in both field and office environments
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
  • Self-driven, competitive, and accountable for territory growth
  • Ability to manage multiple opportunities and projects simultaneously
  • Willingness to travel throughout the assigned territory and visit active jobsites

Ideal Background

We are particularly interested in professionals coming from:

Dewatering Contractors | Pump Manufacturers | Pump Rental Companies | Equipment Rental | Bypass Pumping | Groundwater Control | Municipal/Industrial Pumping | Water & Wastewater | Fluid Handling

Why Us?

This is an opportunity for an experienced pump and dewatering professional to leverage their technical knowledge in a highly customer-facing position with significant responsibility for territory development and growth.

If you understand pumps, dewatering, and how to solve water-management challenges in the field - and you know how to turn that expertise into lasting customer relationships and revenue - we want to speak with you.
